Hello Friends and Neighbors!
I'd like to begin this newsletter by expressing my heartfelt thanks and best wishes to Kelly Woods, one of my special assistants and a dedicated public servant. After 7 years of exceptional service to Ward 5, Kelly is retiring—and while we are thrilled for her, she will be deeply missed.
Kelly has served with both my team and with former Councilman Cedric Crear, always bringing professionalism, care and integrity to her work. Her attention to detail, wealth of knowledge and steady guidance have made her an invaluable part of our team and a true pillar of the Ward 5 office.
On behalf of myself and the entire Ward 5 team: Thank you, Kelly, for your unwavering dedication and hard work. We wish you a joyful and well-deserved retirement filled with peace, rest and new adventures.
We’ll miss you!
June Is African American Music Month!
In my last newsletter, I highlighted the work of the LGBTQ Center in honor of Pride Month. This time, I'd like to shift focus and highlight The HistoryMakers digital archive in honor of African American Music Month.
Available for free through the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District with a valid library card, The HistoryMakers digital archive houses the nation's largest video oral history collection and features more than 2,700 African American trailblazers. I encourage you to use this rich resource to learn about notable Black musicians, like Sammy Davis, Jr., Nat King Cole, Josephine Baker, Harry Belafonte, and the scores of other Black entertainers whose contributions shaped the music scene on The Strip and in the Historic Westside.
Sincerely,
Shondra Summers-Armstrong

8 News Now Interview
Last week, I sat with an 8 News Now reporter to discuss the infrastructure changes coming to the ward. Check out the brief video below to learn more!

"Access City Council"
You can still watch my last interview on the "Access City Council" show! I invited West Preparatory High School Principal Nikia Barker to discuss the state of education in our community. Later, I did a "walk and talk" through Ward 5 with the Planning Department's Fred Solis to discuss your frequently asked questions regarding home improvement. You can watch both segments by clicking the link below!

Southern Nevada Health District Salon Talk
The Southern Nevada Health District hosted a "salon talk" at Ego Tripp Salon May 18 to discuss the connections between menopause and women's heart health. Senior Health Educator Amineh Harvey did an excellent job organizing the event, and the panelists offered practical advice on what women could do to take charge of their health. I'd also like to send special thanks to Kriss Wells, owner of Ego Tripp Salon, for hosting.
ATech Graduation Stoles Distribution
Ward 5 Special Assistant Julius Lightfoot attended a small event April 29 to pass out graduation stoles to seniors in the Advanced Technologies Academy's Hispanic Student Union. The event was co-sponsored with Ward 3 Councilwoman Olivia Diaz. Captured in the photo are the students, ATech staff, Principal Dr. Marentic, Julius and Councilwoman Diaz. Congratulations to all those completing their high school journeys, and good luck in your future endeavors!
Veteran's Court Graduation Ceremony
June 12, I had the pleasure of attending the Veteran's Court graduation ceremony at the Municipal Court. It was an honor to come together with other community members, family and friends to congratulate and celebrate the accomplishments of service men and women who sacrificed so much for our nation but needed a helping hand navigating life's challenges and difficulties. The event was supported by Councilwomen Diaz and Brune and was moderated by Judge Walker.
Father's Day Juneteenth Luncheon At Doolittle
Later that same day, I went to the Doolittle Active Adult Center for their Father's Day and Juneteenth celebration. It was a pleasure to socialize, celebrate and honor fathers and father figures. There was good music, good food and a good time had by all!
Community Flag Day Event
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution's Fransico Garcés Chapter hosted a Community Flag Day and celebration for the 250th birthday for the U.S. Army Saturday, June 14, at the Lorenzi Park rose garden. I was grateful for the opportunity to speak at the event as we honored our nation's flag and commemorated the founding of the U.S. Army, whose brave men and women defend it and our country.
Cancer Awareness Walk
Dr. Theresa Davis presented the "We're Your Strength" cancer awareness walk June 14 at Kianga Isoke Palacio Park, formerly called Doolittle Park. Community members, family and friends joined together to take part in this meaningful event to uplift cancer patients and survivors.
The Just One Project's 5th Annual "On Cloud Wine"
I was delighted to attend The Just One Project's annual fundraising gala May 17 in the Historic Alta Drive Neighborhood. The evening was filled with joy and celebration that benefitted The Just One Project's programs, which seek to provide social services and groceries to those experiencing need in our community. The Just One Project also recognized their 2025 Community Hero, Missy Young, at the event. Congratulations, Missy! Thank you to Brooke and The Just One team for all that you do for the community!

Juneteenth commemorates the day that last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were freed from bondage. In celebrating this holiday, we remember the history of chattel slavery in the United States and its impacts on the present day. This holiday helps us to honor our history by remembering it. We can look to the future with a renewed sense of hope and purpose, even as we contemplate our past.
