Dear Ward 3 neighbors,
I had the honor of recognizing incredibly talented students from two Ward 3 schools at the April 2 City Council meeting. Mariachi Los Pumas de K.O. Knudson Middle School secured back-to-back first-place wins at two recent national mariachi competitions, including the 30th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza held in San Antonio, Texas. The prestigious competition, known as the “Super bowl of mariachi music” included the participation of 1,200 middle, high school, college and university musicians from across the country. Mariachi Los Pumas shined and won best vocal, violin, and armonia sections in their middle-school category.
The Sunrise Acres Elementary School flag football team won the Las Vegas Raiders- sponsored 2024 Silver and Black Citywide Championship against Democracy Prep, concluding a spectacular 10-0 undefeated season! Thank you to the parents, coaches, and all those who have supported these students on their respective musical and athletic journeys.
While Women's History Month has past, every day I am reminded of the tremendous work of trailblazing women in our community. Watch my latest Access City Council, to meet Brooke Neubauer, CEO of The Just One Project, Maggie Clark, Executive Director of Casa de Luz, and Amanda Quintanilla, proud small business owner of Fresa's Skateshop.
As always, please check out my highlights below and join me at some family-friendly events this weekend in Ward 3.
Yours in service,
Olivia Díaz

Historic Designation Ceremony
It was a pleasure to attend the official historic designation ceremony for 1433 Cottonwood Place, as the “Huntridge Home.” The house was one of only three determined to be individually eligible for historic listing by surveys conducted by Cultural Resource Management Firms. The home was constructed in 1944 in Tract No. 3 within the Huntridge subdivision.

I’d like to thank Allan Rogers, board member of the Nevada Preservation Foundation and proud resident of the Historic John S. We learned interesting facts about the homes and the residents of these historic homes, the oldest home dating to 1931. The Helldorado Days Parade, an annual event celebrating our diverse city and its history, is scheduled for Saturday, May 10. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will last about two hours. The parade will take place in downtown Las Vegas on Fourth Street between Gass and Stewart avenues. There are about 135 parade entries. There will be grandstands with shade for the public at Bridger Avenue, food trucks with refreshments, and some fun giveaways. Fourth Street will be closed starting at 6 a.m. May 10 from Las Vegas Boulevard to Stewart Avenue, along with all the cross street in between, reopening after the parade is over.
The Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial offered $1,000 for local school marching band entries, and 11 high school marching bands from the community are expected to participate. A committee will judge the entries during the parade and prizes will be awarded, including Best Casino Float, $500 for the best marching band and $500 for the best historic Las Vegas-themed float.
The Helldorado Days Parade has deep roots in the city of Las Vegas. It is the longest running event in Las Vegas. The event originated in 1935 under the name Helldorado, created by Clyde Zerby to capitalize on the dam workers and the visitors that the construction of the dam would bring to the area. The festival became so popular that in 1946, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans filmed a movie in Las Vegas with Helldorado Days as the movie’s backdrop.
Cultural and historical groups and organizations, schools, artists, car and motorcycle clubs, dancers, equestrians, Zelzah Shriner flivver cars, local businesses and service organizations are expected to participate, along with Big Red, the city's antique fire engine. May 15 is the 120th anniversary of the land auction in 1905, which marks the beginning of Las Vegas. For more information on the Helldorado Days Parade, call 702.229.4859.
