Dear Neighbors,
Summer has arrived in Las Vegas and the weather is HOT! Please make sure to take appropriate steps to keep your loved ones (including your pets) safe! If you go outside, make sure you wear sunscreen and take plenty of water. There are a number of cooling stations throughout the valley which can be found here or by calling 211. In addition, I would encourage you to bring your family to the many splash pads in Ward 6 – including one of my favorites at Gilcrease Brothers Park. You can find a list of all city of Las Vegas splash pads here. Finally, you can bring your family to the city of Las Vegas Centennial Hills Community Center, operated by the YMCA to enjoy their pool.
Speaking of staying cool, we're hosting our Splash Back to School event Friday, July 26, 5-7 p.m. at the Centennial Hills Community Center YMCA pool with free swimming, ice cream, music, and more!
As you may have seen, the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has reported the highest level of activity of Aedes aegypti mosquitos in the region, with 91 mosquito pools from 16 zip codes testing positive for West Nile Virus, and two mosquito pools from two zip codes testing positive for St. Louis encephalitis. While there are no known vaccines or medicines to prevent West Nile Virus, there are a number of steps residents in the valley can take to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, including:
- Eliminate standing water and other breeding sources around homes.
- Prevent mosquito bites by using Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent.
- Report mosquito activity to SNHD's surveillance program at 702-759-1633.
As a Board Member of the SNHD, I will continue to monitor the situation to keep our residents safe.
I’d also like to invite you to attend Blast Off in the Basin this Fourth of July to celebrate 248 years of freedom in our great country. Join me and Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske for fireworks from inside the Buckskin Water Retention Basin with a live DJ and food trucks on site for food purchase. The festivities begin at 7 p.m. Bring blankets, water, and sunblock. Hope to see you and your families there!

Transparency, a willingness to listen to our neighbors, and creating policies that make Ward 6 better are my guiding principles. Please know that I am committed to working with you to make Ward 6 the place families want to live, work, and play.

As a reminder, illegal fireworks, including firecrackers, Roman candles, and skyrockets brought into Clark County not only pose a threat to public safety, but they also come with a minimum $500 fine if confiscated by the police.
Fourth of July Animal Safety
Ensure your pets stay safe this Fourth of July by keeping them indoors, away from fireworks, and in a calm environment.
For safety precautions, you can also microchip your pets. With the release of fireworks, the city typically sees an uptick in animals that run away from their homes. All dogs and cats over the age of four months residing in the city of Las Vegas must have a microchip by Aug. 1, 2024. Read about the microchipping ordinance here.
Fostering and Adoption
Did you know that since the beginning of June, the Animal Foundation alone has taken in over 1,000 animals? That's a lot of furry friends needing homes! By adopting or fostering, you not only saves lives, but you're also promoting responsible pet ownership and supporting our awesome local shelters and rescues. And if you can't adopt or foster, volunteering makes a world of difference, as well!
I'm a foster parent myself through Southern Nevada Animal Rescue League to Bear, a sweet, loving, 5-month-old male. Learn more about fostering with SNARL here.
Madi from Team Brune is also fostering through the The Animal Foundation. Say hello to Bella, an affectionate 9-year-old pitbull in need of a forever home!
For further details about Bella, you can view her bio or contact mweingardt@lasvegasnevada.gov.

Ways to Stay Cool This Summer
Fellow animal lovers, Gilcrease Animal Sanctuary is having a summer deal! On Wednesdays, entry fees (ages 3+) are only $5 at the door until August. You can meet over 200 rescued residents, including parrots, reptiles, pigs, donkeys and emus. Barn Buddies Rescue at The Farm also features rescued large farm animals. These are great local places to hang out while supporting our animal rescues.
Fishing Derby and Pancake Breakfast
I hosted our annual Fishing Derby at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, engaging with residents, awarding prizes for the top catches and enjoying the splendid day. It wouldn't have been possible without Southern Nevada Building Trades Unions, which provided complimentary poles, and Troop 129, which cooked up a delicious pancake breakfast!

Be Neighborly
I had the opportunity to partner with city of Las Vegas Neighborhood Services for a fantastic community event! We shared information about various city programs designed to support and enhance our neighborhoods.

Thanks to Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman for opening up the morning and recognizing the important contributions our Latino community has made to our gaming and accommodations industry. Latinos account for 35 percent of the workforce in Nevada's food, gaming, and accommodations industry. |
Community Business Meeting
We recently hosted our "Bocaditos" gathering on a Saturday morning so that our neighbors who work during the week could stop by and visit with us. It was great to see so many new faces from Ward 6 (particularly our young neighbors) and hear their enthusiasm for potential development ideas in our community. If you missed it, we're holding weekend community meetings every quarter moving forward. So, we hope to see you at the next one!
Special thanks to Sgt. Jeff Belcher, K-9 Scarlett, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Crime Prevention Specialist Heidi Straif, Planning Commissioner Jennifer Taylor, Senior Advisory Board Member Caroline Mozdean and Community Development Recommending Board Member Linda Burks for sharing their insights.
Senior Housing Open Discussion
Team Brune organized a housing discussion for seniors at our active adult center. Thank you to Ovation (which is building the development at Decatur/Rome), city staff, our Senior Community Advisory Board members, and the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority for presenting helpful information and answering questions.
