Circus Fun At Employee Appreciation Picnic March 9
Last Saturday, 790 people attended the Employee Appreciation Picnic at Garehime Heights Park. It was a joyful carnival of laughter, camaraderie and celebration.
The Department Team Challenge provided many laughs, but in the end, the Review Crew team from the Community Development Plans Examination Section stole the show. Big congratulations to champion team members Mike Clifford, Alex Garcia, Brad Elliot and Randy Ehardt. They will have possession of the trophy until next year, as well as the bragging rights.
Families enjoyed face painting, games, a jump house, refreshments, raffles and a beautiful day in the park. The Pet Contest was a furry spectacle of cuteness, with many adorable winners. The photos (above and below) capture the magic of the day.
A shout out to all those who contributed:
- Parks & Ground Maintenance for park cleanup
- Public Safety for the drone show and security coverage
- Pop-Up Mobile Recreation Unit for fun games
- Production Services Unit for the stage and sound
- Council/Event Services
- City Manager's Office
- Employee Recognition Committee members.
Executive Spotlight
We are continuing our new feature -- the Executive Spotlight -- in the Weekly Update. As a way for employees to get better acquainted with the city’s leadership team, an executive will be highlighted each week. All of them will answer the same five questions. We continue with our Municipal Court Administrator Jack Eslinger!
-
What is the weirdest job you’ve ever had? Manual labor in a hazardous waste processing plant (1982).
-
Tell us something about yourself that may surprise us. I almost died in a lightning strike at the plant in 1982.
-
What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing your current one? Either chef or college professor
-
What is your favorite movie or line from a movie? “Do or do not, there is no try.” -- Master Yoda
-
What do you love best about living in Southern Nevada? Abundant sunshine and, despite being a large city now, I am always amazed how people are connected.
Left: Jack with his family - Adam, Dee and Daniel - in Ireland at the Cliffs of Moher. Right: Jack Eslinger and Dee at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Email Signature Block
Just a reminder that employees should be using the approved city signature block in their emails. Using the approved block lets those receiving your emails know that you are an official agent of the city of Las Vegas. Plus it gives our organization a consistent and professional look. Please be sure to use the most updated version and refrain from customizing the block beyond the approved appearance. You are welcome to add your personal pronouns should you choose. The template for the official city email signature block can be found here and on the employee portal at https://emp.lasvegasnevada.gov/Departments/Communications, under the Resources tab.
Volunteer Values Conference Ambassadors Needed!
The Employee Values Conference is scheduled for Tuesday-Wednesday, April 23-24, and we need employee ambassadors to help man the wayfinding and check-in areas. This could include scanning QR codes to sign-in employees, assisting with directions and more. If you would enjoy seeing and assisting your fellow employees, as well as some nonprofit groups that will be attending, this is for you! Also, if there are others you know who might like to volunteer, please pass this along to them. The hours we need coverage are approximately 7:30 to 11 a.m. and then 12:30 to 3 p.m. both days. Please let Niki Gomoluh know if you can cover all or part of a shift, with your supervisor's approval! Email Niki at ngomoluh@LasVegasNevada.gov or call ext. 6020 to sign up or with questions.

Join us in congratulating the ARPA Grant Program coordinators, who recently worked with SmartLab to improve their process for reviewing reimbursement requests! Over a series of facilitated exercises, the group combined their shared experiences and best practices to develop a new standardized approach to their work. They improved existing documentation and developed a new reference guide to help them reduce redundancies and streamline their decision-making. Their improvements are estimated to save up to 100 labor hours each year and will help get approved reimbursements out to our community faster! As a result of their work, each of these staff members has received their SmartLab Green Belt certifications!
SmartLab is the city’s internal continuous improvement program. We use lean and other process improvement methods to streamline work, reduce waste and help the city deliver more value for our community. SmartLab services are available to all city teams by request and can be customized to meet your needs. Contact SmartLabAdmin@lasvegasnevada.gov or visit SmartLab’s SharePoint site to learn more.
