Spring Happenings

March 13, 2024

Dear Ward 3 Neighbors,

Though hidden from your inbox view, my dedication and passion to serve still rings true. An election cycle is upon us. I signed off participating in my last "Access to City Council" episode recently, due to the city’s ethics rules, and this is the last newsletter with a personal message from me for the next few months. Please continue to be on the lookout for all city and Ward 3 information via all upcoming Ward 3 newsletters. In addition, rest assured that Ydoleena, Anastacio, Mariela and I stand ready to assist all Ward 3 residents, businesses, developers and any partners looking to do good work for our community. The best e-mail to reach out to the office is ward3@lasvegasnevada.gov or call us directly at 702.229.2359.

I want to start by sharing the news that this week is Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s (LVMPD) Downtown Area Command (DTAC) Captain Brandon Oris’ final week serving and protecting Ward 3 residents and businesses. Thank you Captain Oris for helping us drive and coordinate public safety efforts! You have been a true partner in getting the new LVMPD substation on Fremont Street, starting the Safe Village initiative for Naked City, and communicating with Chief Potts regularly on Operation S.A.F.E.R. Let’s give incoming DTAC Captain Adam Seely a warm Ward 3 welcome!

I am pleased to share that the city of Las Vegas has deployed a third round of Business Security Grants to help business operators located in qualified census tracks with up to $10,000 for security upgrades. The program provides financial assistance for securing buildings by adding fencing, security cameras or other security measures. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, with a total cap of $1 million for the program. Help us spread the word and don’t miss your opportunity to apply at https://cityoflasvegas.formstack.com/forms/business_security_program.

Tilson is working across East Las Vegas to bring fiber-optic communications to the homes of Ward 3 residents. So far they have completed 74 miles of network construction in Ward 3, which, when finalized, will allow for faster internet speeds and better connections. Keep checking the Ward 3 newsletter for updates on when and how Ward 3 residents will have the opportunity to take advantage of this new communications infrastructure.

Finally, Happy Women’s History Month! I want to thank my ancestors and all the women trailblazers who advocated for safer working conditions, the right to vote, and pay equity, just to name a few. Let’s not take this progress for granted and continue to empower, embrace and uplift each other!

Yours in service,

Olivia Diaz

Ward 3 Councilwoman

Harris Ribbon-Cutting

We're excited to share the completion of the $5.47 million Harris Trail project by our Public Works Department, marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 31. This project, led under my guidance, revitalized Harris Avenue from Bruce Street to Mojave Avenue, featuring new walking paths, bike lanes, and improved safety measures, including a flashing beacon at Bruce Street. Additionally, the unconstructed portion of Harris Avenue between 21st Street and Eastern Avenue has been transformed into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly space.
