May 4, 2023
Dear Neighbors,
May is full of so many important observances, like Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Brain Cancer Awareness Month, Clean Air Month, Military Appreciation Month, Small Business Month, and so much more! It's also Family Wellness Month, which is our focus.
There are so many components for a functional family unit – they range from social, economic, physical, environmental, and mental factors. Take some extra time to spend with your family this month, like making healthy food choices, meditating together, or volunteering together. Summer is right around the corner and a many of the city's recreational facilities are open. Take your family to our park splash pads that opened this past Monday. Or stop by our two enclosed city pools that are open year-round! Entrance fees are up to $3 per person per day, or you can opt in for season passes.
Councilwoman Brune volunteering wit the Just One Project for Earth Day. They served 7,017 clients!
From as early as I can remember, I have seen first-hand what our service members undergo for the good of our country. I come from a family of U.S. Air Force and Army members. I am proud to say that I support our troops, their families, and I understand the sacrifice the Armed Forces make to keep our country safe and free. As a very small token of gratitude this month, please join the Ward 6 team in recognizing Military Appreciation Month. In observation of Armed Forces Day, we are partnering with Ward 4 Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske for our Movie in the Park event Friday, May 12, starting at dusk. The movie is FREE for all and will include popcorn and some special guests! The event will be held at the Centennial Hills Park Amphitheatre at 7701 N. Buffalo Drive. I am also pleased to say that the city of Las Vegas proudly supports those who are currently serving. I am pleased to share that our very own Ward 6 team member Danny Pierrott will be off on U.S. Navy Reserve orders starting next week. As a U.S. Navy Reserve Public Affairs Officer, Danny is learning strategic communication tactics for any given situation. Please join me in wishing him well while he is away!
As you know, Ward 6 is the fastest growing area in Las Vegas. With that in mind, my team and I are hosting our first Small Business Breakfast, inviting small business owners to stop by to share concerns, learn about economic development projects in the city, and meet other business owners in our neighborhood for Small Business Month. We also encourage those interested in starting a small business to join us so we can connect and offer resources to get your business off the ground. The breakfast will be held Wednesday, May 24, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Centennial Hills Community Center/YMCA (7701 N. Buffalo Drive). R.S.V.P.s are required, so please email ward6@lasvegasnevada.gov to reserve your spot!
Do you know someone in the Ward 6 community that goes above and beyond? We would like to recognize them! Every couple of months we get the privilege to publicly recognize and thank someone during one of our City Council meetings. If you have a community leader in mind, please send us your recommendations to ward6@lasvegasnevada.gov by May 15.
In closing, Happy Mother's Day and congratulations to our graduates that receive their diplomas this month! Please share your graduation pictures with us so we can celebrate with you.
As always, if there is anything Team Brune can do to assist you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
At your service,
Nancy E. Brune, Ph.D.
