March 15, 2023
I hope everyone is having a good March. The theme of my focus this month is Nutrition. One thing I’ve been doing this month is to start my day drinking warm water with fresh lemon juice, which is a great source of Vitamin C.
For those with school age children, please continue to enjoy a safe and restful spring break with your kids. There are very few things that equate to being a parent and I’m proud to have three of my own children. In Ward 6, there are lots of opportunities to visit nearby state parks and camping sites with the recent change in weather. If you have not yet explored the Tule Springs Fossil Beds, the site offers amazing scenery for everyone -- filled with trails and rich history!
At our last “Bocaditos with Brune,” we were pleased to receive many of our neighbors, who shared their concerns! Among their top issues were speeding, outdoor recreation, legislation to support individuals with different abilities, and more sporting options to Ward 6 (particularly pickleball!). Amongst our seniors' top concerns were housing and food insecurity. According to Feeding America, one in 15 older adults face hunger, impacting their health and nutrition. Here in the city, food insecurity currently sits at 11.8 percent.
On the topic of this month’s nutrition focus, highlighting good nutrition and maintaining good health is a top priority for the Ward 6 office. An incredible local resource is Three Square -- Southern Nevada's only food bank and the area's largest hunger-relief organization. Three Square offers a Senior Hunger Program that provides food-insecure older adults with healthy groceries through senior-only pantries, home delivery and community meals. Three Square also helps with referrals and applications for federal assistance, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP provides nutrition benefits to supplement the food budget of needy families so they can purchase healthy food and move towards self-sufficiency. To be eligible, you just need to be at least 60 years old. Fill out their SNAP referral form here.
Last week, Ward 6 attended the Wellness and First Responders Roundtable. This initiative seeks to raise awareness about mental health/wellness among first responders and create real solutions to support our first responders and their families. Thank you to my colleague Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske for hosting this initiative!
As I've mentioned in the past, public safety is one of my top priorities and I thank those who have contacted our office, sharing some of their concerns. I’ve spoken with Sheriff Kevin McMahill to explore options related to speeding, traffic-related infractions and other public safety issues. In the 2023 State of the Department address, Sheriff McMahill pledged to reduce crime by 10 percent this year and to “inject[..] humanity into [their] policing approach to the community.” As public servants, it’s our duty to bridge the gaps between government and community, and we hope that our upcoming Public Safety Town Hall is one of the many ways to do that.
Mark your calendars! I’ll be co-hosting our Public Safety Town Hall alongside Councilwoman Allen-Palenske, as we bring together Sheriff McMahill, Assistant Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi, and Northwest Area Command Captain Raul Rodriguez Thursday, March 23, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center (6601 N. Buffalo Drive) to discuss your public safety concerns. Light refreshments will be served. Please submit questions to ward6staff@lasvegasnevada.gov.
And speaking of public safety, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is hosting a recruitment Women's Boot Camp this Saturday, March 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Metro Police Academy (9880 W. Cheyenne Ave.). Women 18 years of age and older who are interested in a career in law enforcement are welcome to attend. This event is 80s themed so don’t forget to dress 80s! Send an email to RSVP to U16748D@lvmpd.com.
As a member of the Nevada Commission on School Funding, I am pleased that we were able to have a presentation from the Nevada Commission on School Funding at a city of Las Vegas special council meeting March 6. Guy Hobbs, chairman of the Nevada Commission on School Funding, along with Nevada Department of Education Superintendent Jhone Ebert, presented a summary of the Commission’s report, which included information on school funding and possible sources of funding to support students.
As I close, I want to leave you with a few reminders:
- I will be launching a Small Business Council in Ward 6. Please let us know if you are interested in participating. For more information, please contact Ward6@lasvegasnevada.gov.
- Calling all Ward 6 Food Truck businesses. The city of Las Vegas regularly hosts events in Ward 6. I want to make sure Ward 6 food truck businesses are included. Please contact our office if you own a Ward 6 food truck (and catering) company.
- I will be hosting a town hall in the spring to share some exciting projects in Ward 6 and what we’ve accomplished 150 days into our tenure.
As always, if there is anything Team Brune can do to assist you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
At your service,
Nancy E. Brune, Ph.D.

Neighborhood Partners Fund Grants Available
The Neighborhood Partners Fund (NPF) grant program is open to registered neighborhood, homeowners and business associations in all city of Las Vegas wards. It is a competitive grant program with a total of $80,000 available for neighborhood grants this year. On average, Ward 6 receives very little, as residents rarely apply, so I encourage and challenge all Ward 6 neighbors to apply!
The NPF, a real “do-it-yourself” program for neighborhoods, allows the city to support citizen creativity, empowerment and responsibility. Applications are open now. The deadline for pre-applications is March 27, 2023, and the final deadline is Sunday, April 30, 2023.
An association may apply for up to $5,000, which must be matched by the neighborhood. At least 25 percent of the match must come from volunteer labor, valued at $29.95 per hour. As much as 75 percent of the neighborhood’s match can be from cash and/or donated supplies, equipment, or professional services. See all the details on the opportunity, deadlines and more at https://www.lasvegasnevada.gov/Residents/Grants. Questions? Contact the NPF Program Administrator by calling 702-229-2346 or email to NPF@LasVegasNevada.gov.
