Two New Statues Unveiled Honoring the Happiest Mayor in the Universe & Fallen Police Officer Erik Lloyd

The city of Las Vegas unveiled two new statues at city facilities Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022. The first statue is of former Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, and was unveiled at the Historic Fifth Street School, located at 401 S. Fourth St. The second statue is of late Metropolitan Police Lt. Erik Lloyd, and was unveiled at the Centennial Hills Community Center, located at 6601 N. Buffalo Drive.

Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, also known as "The Happiest Mayor in the Universe," was elected in 1999 and served the maximum three terms as mayor of Las Vegas before being succeeded by his wife, Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman, in 2011. Mayor Oscar B. Goodman was known for his efforts to revitalize and redevelop downtown Las Vegas, his push to bring world-class attractions to the city and for being the city’s biggest supporter.

Officer Lloyd served the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for 29 years, starting his career as a patrol officer in 1990. Lloyd was well known for his role as president of the Injured Officers Police Fund, where he raised money for the spouses of fallen officers. Lloyd passed away July 29, 2020, from complications caused by COVID-19.

The two bronze statues were sculpted by artist Brian Hanlon.

Traffic Updates

Long-Term Lane Restrictions on Charleston Boulevard in East Las Vegas Continue through September 2023

Long-term traffic restrictions on Charleston Boulevard continue due to NDOT’s I-515 (U.S. 95) Charleston Project. The restrictions are necessary to perform bridge work, pavement rehabilitation and widening, median remediation, and work on underground utilities.

Through late September 2023, westbound traffic on Charleston will be shifted to the eastbound lanes.

The configuration reduces Charleston to two lanes in both directions between North Honolulu Street and North Sacramento Drive.

Pedestrian access on the north side of Charleston is closed from Sacramento to Honolulu; pedestrians have access to cross under the Charleston bridge on the south side of Charleston. Drivers can get updates on the project and information about traffic restrictions at i515Charleston.com (i515Charleston.com).

For the latest state highway conditions, visit nvroads.com (nvroads.com) or call 511 before driving.
