March 7, 2022
Dear Neighbors,
Happy Women's History Month, Purim, International Earth Day, and St. Patrick's Day! As we enter into March, I am reminded of the long journey it has been since March of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit our valley the hardest and the sacrifices we all made to keep each other healthy.
Staying healthy and making sure that Las Vegas stays safe have been two of my top priorities as your representative, and I will continue to push for investments in the Medical District to ensure we are prepared for anything to come, as a community.
A few days ago, I had the opportunity to meet the incoming doctors and healthcare professionals who will be practicing medicine right here in Ward 1, when I stopped by the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV's White Coat Ceremony to meet the Class of 2024 graduates. Our future looks bright!
I also had the opportunity to meet with Las Vegas Fire & Rescue's Bomb Squad to learn more about the work they do to keep the Las Vegas valley safe from disasters. Hearing from both front-line workers and medical professionals has not only been fun, but rewarding, as we continue investing in these essential programs and resources.
This month, I look forward to joining the community in exciting events that will benefit Ward 1 businesses and nonprofit organizations.
Later this month, I'm excited to meet neighbors for our monthly Brews with Brian event, hosted at the Sporting Life Bar, a local Ward 1 small business. If you're interested in attending, please email my staff to RSVP for your seat! I want to hear from you when it comes to all things neighborhoods and more.
In the meantime, I wish you and your family a safe, and healthy start to this new month. If there is anything my team or I can do to assist you, please don't hesitate to reach out!
Very Truly Yours,
Brian Knudsen

NEVADA READING WEEK!
For many students in the Clark County School District, last week was the time to read a book! It was great stopping by Vegas Verdes Elementary School to read to first-grade students. Thanks to Ms. Sumlin and Principal Grondahl for letting me stop by! I look forward to reading to more Ward 1 schools.

PAINTING CURBS AND CLEANING UP TRASH AROUND JAMES DOWN TOWERS
My team, the city of Las Vegas Office of Community Services, and local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints volunteers joined together to help repaint sun-beaten fire lanes and curbs, and clean up trash at the James Down Senior Towers! My team and I look forward to continuing our partnerships with local churches to provide volunteer opportunities to youth, and look forward to more events to keep Ward 1 looking the best it can be!

RECOGNIZING THE MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS AT CITY HALL
Last month, I hosted a small gathering at Las Vegas City Hall to show appreciation to our Southern Nevada Health District Medical Reserve Corps volunteers for their work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of their day jobs, they volunteer to keep others healthy -- that should be recognized! Congratulations to all those who put in volunteer hours. I look forward to recognizing more of you as this year unfolds!

Strong Start Academy Elementary School
An online interest form for the new Strong Start Academy Elementary School is now available at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/StrongStart. Those with children entering kindergarten, first or second grade should fill out the interest form that is available through Thursday, April 14.
The Las Vegas City Council approved a resolution to fund the new nonprofit charter school with a grant of up to $1 million. The new school, known as the Strong Start Academy Elementary School, is set to open in August offering kindergarten through second grade. The nonprofit was recently granted a charter by the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority. The school will be overseen by a nonprofit board designated by the City Council. The board, which currently has one vacancy, named long-time educator Miriam Benitez executive director.
The school will plan to add one grade level each year until it offers kindergarten through fifth grade. The student-to-teacher ratio will be 20:1 for all grade levels throughout the charter term (six years).
Year one of the school will have 180 students enrolled, and at capacity the school will have 360 students. If interest is greater than first-year capacity, a lottery will be held to determine who will be enrolled.
The educational model of the school is a dual-language immersion, bilingual education in English and Spanish.
The Strong Start Academy Elementary School will offer an equitable, high-quality and innovative educational school model to support the communities of Wards 1, 3 and 5. The communities that the school aims to serve are traditionally and significantly underserved populations with students attending one-star and two-star schools.
