United States Air Force Celebrates its Birthday
The U.S. Air Force was not always a separate branch in the military. It had gone through several designations: Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909); Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914); United States Army Air Service (1918); United States Army Air Corps (1926) and United States Army Air Forces (1941).
On Sept. 18, 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act, which established the Department of Defense. The Air Force became an independent military branch and was viewed as equal to the Navy and Army. Seventy-four years later, the U.S. Air Force remains second-to-none.
