Hello, Ward 6! As always, the ward is jam-packed and busy with fun events. There was a mock trial at the YMCA at Centennial Hills Park and a cleanup at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs. We also made time to celebrate at the Las Vegas Days Parade and viewed the premiere of “The City Of Las Vegas: The Thirties” historical documentary. Additionally, we have been prepping for a music festival and a movie in the park! Read more about all of these wonderful events below.

Community Invited To Free Las Vegas Bluegrass Festival

The city of Las Vegas will host the 2021 Las Vegas Bluegrass Festival Saturday, May 22, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Centennial Hills Park, 7101 N. Buffalo Drive. The event is free and open to all ages. All state and local COVID-19 mitigation requirements will be followed.

The festival lineup features some of the best Bluegrass and Americana bands in the nation, including Out of the Desert, Fog Holler, Never Come Down, Nu Blu, The Marty Warburton Band, and The Po’ Ramblin' Boys.

Children will be able to enjoy a festival area designed just for them, with games and activities programmed for them throughout the festival.

In addition to music, the festival will have food and alcohol vendors as well as an artisan market. Some of the participating artisan vendors are Momper Romper, Sew Devine Custom Jackets, and Tea Bath Products. A variety of food trucks will serve everything from fresh, healthy organic food to burgers, hot dogs, shaved ice treats, and churros. Outside food and alcohol are not permitted at the festival. For a full list of vendors and food trucks, visit the event page.

The event is broken into two sessions with an hour break between 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., to allow time to sanitize reserved pods. Pod reservations for each session are full, but more attendees can enjoy the vendors, children's festival area, and get a COVID-19 vaccination, while enjoying the music.

The city of Las Vegas and the Southern Nevada Health District are teaming up to provide a pop-up COVID-19 vaccination site at the festival for ages 12 and older. Parental/guardian permission is required for youth vaccinations. Vaccinations will be offered in the vendor area from noon to 6 p.m. Vaccinations will be offered to walk-ups, but you also can schedule an appointment at vax4nv.nv.gov/patient/s/. Click “Schedule An Appointment” and follow the prompts. Select the date you want and continue to follow the prompts to select the location. For assistance scheduling a vaccination appointment, individuals may call 1-800-401-0946.

Movie in the Park: 'Raya and the Last Dragon'

Join us June 4 at 7 p.m. as we travel to the fantasy world of Kumandra in "Raya and the Last Dragon." Five hundred years ago, an evil threatened the land where humans and dragons lived in harmony; the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. That evil has now returned and Raya must track down the legendary last dragon to help restore the land and the people that live there. On her journey, she’ll learn that it will take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.

We can't wait to see you there. As always, we'll bring the popcorn and water. You just need to bring some low-backed chairs or blankets to sit on. Food trucks will have refreshments for sale during the evening.

Las Vegas Days Hits the Dusty Trail

Las Vegas Days, formerly known as Helldorado, has come and gone, but left some wonderful memories. This was the first year that the city of Las Vegas held a "reverse parade," to maintain social distancing measures. The displays stayed in one spot and the guests drove by in their cars. Councilwomen Fiore and Diaz had a blast greeting attendees on top of Big Red (the fire truck). They loved seeing everyone who came out to say hello. The first Helldorado parade was held in 1935.

Speaking of the 1930s, Councilwoman Fiore was honored to attend the premiere of the historical documentary, "The City of Las Vegas: The Thirties." She enjoyed every moment of it and recommends it. To view the documentary, please visit here.

Goldilocks & the Three Bears (Mock Trial)

Saturday, May 15, the Ward 6 office had jury duty! The YMCA Teen Connection put on a mock trial for Teen Connection v. Goldilocks. Team “Teen Connections” (Plaintiff) began opening statements with concise and convincing arguments and team "Goldilocks" (Defendant) fired back with sound reasoning and persuasive points. During the trial, the judge did a wonderful job controlling her courtroom as the bailiff rendered the oath to the jurors and witnesses, all while ensuring everyone’s safety. There were many witnesses called to the stand, including Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Baby Bear, Goldilocks, and the Wood Cutter. All of them did a fantastic job answering the difficult questions posed by both teams.

In the end, after much deliberation and consideration of the powerful arguments made by both sides, the jury found Goldilocks "not guilty" on all counts! We would like to thank the YMCA for putting on such an engaging program to educate and involve our future leaders and we especially would like to congratulate and commend all of the participants in the trial. Great job!

To see more of the photos from this engaging program, check out the YMCA's Facebook page.

RTC Transit Services & Updates

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) has embarked on a 45-day public comment period from April 15 to May 31 regarding proposed transit service changes to take place by late summer. Before they make changes, they want to hear from our community, both digitally and in person, for help. They say, "More, more, more! That is what the community can expect when the RTC implements proposed transit service changes later this year. More service, more routes, more frequency.

As a result of the pandemic, the RTC received federal stimulus funding to restore and enhance essential public transit services. But before they make any changes, they need to hear from you.

Share your feedback through a brief survey by Monday, May 31, to receive a 24-hour transit pass or be entered into a weekly drawing for a chance to win a gift card. Providing your input can help determine how the RTC proceeds with changes later this year.

Find out more and take the survey at rtcsnv.com, then look below for more RTC updates.

Vaccination Transportation Assistance Program

The RTC is working closely with the Southern Nevada Health District to ensure that those who want to get COVID vaccinations have the transportation to do so. They can provide free transit passes and transport people from one central location to the vaccination clinics.

Try Transit – Return to Work Program

The RTC is offering furloughed workers a free 14-day transit pass as they return to work to try transit. Along with the pass, the RTC will provide more information about routes and schedules.

Nevadans Invited to Vote for New Electronic Freeway Sign Safety Messages

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is inviting Nevadans to vote on traffic safety messages to be displayed on electronic freeway signs throughout the state.

        3

In summer 2020, NDOT invited Nevada drivers to submit contest entries for traffic safety messages to be displayed on freeway signs. Nearly 1,000 submissions were received. All were closely evaluated based on creativity and relevance to Nevada traffic safety and signage needs. Now that traffic volumes are returning to normal, NDOT has resumed the contest and is inviting Nevadans to visit dot.nv.gov/sign before June 15 to vote for their top three selections from the following entries:

  • When Driving Use Your Thinker and Your Blinker
  • That’s The Temperature Not the Speed Limit
  • Texts Means Wrecks
  • It’s Not a Race, Leave Some Space
  • There is No Need to Drive At Warp Speed
  • Practice Vehicle Social Distancing. Don’t Tailgate
  • Your Seat Belt Looks Good On You
  • Gamble at the Casino Not Your Car. Buckle Up!
  • Camp In The Mountains, Not the Left Lane
  • Turn Signals Come Free with Vehicles. Use Them.
  • Don’t Get Exhausted. Tailgating Blows.

The messages, which were all submitted by Nevadans, are a mix of popular national driving safety messages and original messages. The winning messages will periodically be displayed on some of the approximately 400 electronic freeway signs statewide. As summer travel season approaches and certain health restrictions loosen, increased freeway travel will give more visibility to the important traffic safety messages.

Last year, more than 300 individuals were killed in Nevada traffic crashes. With over 90 percent of U.S. crashes caused in part by driver behavior (such as speeding or driving impaired, distracted or recklessly), the message boards are an important driving safety reminder. In Nevada, speeding has been a large contributor to traffic deaths, leading to approximately 35 percent of traffic deaths last year.

“Speeding or driving impaired, distracted, or recklessly are choices we make, and those choices can have deadly consequences,” NDOT Director Kristina Swallow explained. “We appreciate everyone who invested their time and talent to contribute effective messages that can be a first-line defense in reminding motorists in Nevada to drive safely.”
