Happy New Year from my family to yours!

This year has posed many challenges for people globally, specifically due to the wide-spread of the coronavirus. We are hopeful the COVID-19 vaccine will help curve or eliminate the number of positive results in our state. I want to express the importance of wearing a mask while in public as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Masks offer a layer of protection for yourself and people around you. Also, please continue to follow the six-foot social distancing recommendation. COVID-19 cases have been increasing during this holiday and flu season. I am encouraging you to "mask-up" for Nevada to help reduce the spread of coronavirus cases in our great city. I look forward to serving the community in 2021. Have a safe and Happy New Year!

Key information was provided about the coronavirus and the importance of the black community’s participation in the inoculation. Listen to gain valuable information about how the vaccine was developed, minority involvement and more. This is a powerful webinar which will answer many burning questions about COVID-19 and the vaccine.

Juliana Urtubey does not view her students as blank slates and feels it’s important to know where they come from. She wants insight into their families and communities, their goals and interests.

“I’m always teaching based on that,” said Urtubey, a learning strategist at Booker Elementary School in Las Vegas’ Historic Westside.

Urtubey’s approach to teaching has garnered attention. In September, she was named the 2010 Nevada Teacher of the Year by Gov. Steve Sisolak and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jhone Ebert.

I am proud, as the Councilman representing this area, that a teacher in Ward 5 received this honor. Visit the Review-Journal to read the full article.
