Dear Neighbors,

The state of Nevada is still in Phase II of Roadmap to Recovery Plan, and many businesses and casinos opened their doors today utilizing restrictions, new sanitation practices, and the use of social distancing guidelines. The Fremont Street Experience is also open with controlled access. Live entertainment and the SlotZilla zip line will not open until next week.

I would like to once again thank residents and businesses for their continued patience as we work together to get through COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions. My office is open to serve you if you should have additional questions about the programs the city is offering.

Please continue the use of face masks so that we as a city can help prevent the spread of the virus.

Yours in service,

Condolences and prayer for the family of George Floyd

Councilman Crear spoke during the June 3 City Council final announcements. He stated, "Justice for one should be justice for all.” The hurt and pain the African-American community continues to feel is deeply rooted.  He contends that there are too many cases where murderers are exonerated from the killing of African-Americans. He further mentioned that protesting should not cause destruction and said, “We have to do better.” He also offered prayers for Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer, Shay Mikalonis, who was shot on Monday during a protest. The Councilman's full statement is available here.

New Nevada 211 App Can Help

The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services has announced the release of a Nevada 211 app to help more Nevadans connect with the resources they need.

Nevada 211, a free service that includes information about health and human service programs and resources that are available throughout the state, can be accessed online at Nevada211.org, by dialing 2-1-1 or by texting your zip code to 898211.

“Nevada 211 has been a valuable resource for many years and while people are struggling with the impact of COVID-19 in their day-to-day lives, the addition of an app makes it even easier to help Nevadans find the resources they need,” said Nevada 211 Coordinator Jennifer White. “Everything that can be found on the website or by calling is now available in a convenient phone app.”

Money Management International administers the program. The Nevada 211 app is free to download and available in the Apple App Store and Google Play.

NDOT

Washington Paving Upgrades And Lane Closures Continue Through June 30

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is undertaking a $1.12 million, half-mile-long upgrade of Washington Avenue (State Route 578) between A Street and Las Vegas Boulevard in downtown Las Vegas. Las Vegas Paving is the general contractor. The project calls for milling and placing new asphalt pavement as well as reconstructing handicap ramps. The right travel lane in each direction will remain closed 24/7, due to light traffic volumes, throughout the project. Construction is scheduled to finish by June 30.

Motorists should use caution while travelling through work zones, heed construction signage, and take alternate routes, if possible. NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors. For the latest state highway conditions, visit nvroads.com or call 511 before driving.

NDOT and its contractors continue vital highway construction and maintenance activities, keeping up Nevada’s transportation system for essential travel and supply chain deliveries. The department actively practices COVID-19-related public health and safety protocols, including social distancing of six feet or more and restricting groups to 10 or less, thereby keeping our team, families and communities safe and connected.

FOOD SERVICE

CCSD plans to continue providing meals to students through June 30 at current food distribution sites. Any changes to CCSD meal sites after June 30 will be communicated to parents via a ParentLink message.

SBA

In response to COVID-19, the Nevada Division of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) has implemented and launched a NEW filing system for Nevada residents who have been affected by the pandemic to receive benefits. This is completely separate from filing for traditional unemployment insurance benefits. Please read the important information on this page before filing a PUA claim on the designated platform.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) is a new temporary federal program that is part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. PUA is separate from unemployment insurance and provides coverage only to individuals who are not eligible for regular unemployment insurance.

PUA is available to Nevada workers who are unemployed, partially unemployed, unable to work or unavailable for work due to the COVID-19 pandemic and who are not eligible for other unemployment insurance benefits. This includes many different groups of people:

  • Self-employed
  • 1099 contract workers
  • Gig workers
  • Employees whose wages are not reported for unemployment insurance
  • Employees who have not earned enough wages or worked enough hours for regular unemployment benefits
  • Individuals who were going to start work but could not due to COVID-19 pandemic.
