Nevada State

Dear Neighbors,

Governor Sisolak announced May 27 that the state is ready to move into Phase 2 of the state’s Roadmap to Recovery reopening plan. This is possible because Nevadans have cooperated in helping to flatten the curve. The governor’s full report on Phase 2 is available in the state’s link below.

I am proud to announce that the city of Las Vegas will reopen splash pads, skate parks, sports courts, exercise and fitness stations in its parks tomorrow. These facilities will operate at 50 percent of normal capacity; social distancing guidelines remain in place.  Playgrounds and water fountains in city parks will remain closed until further notice.

If you plan on visiting parks, please practice social distancing, with six feet between people. We are currently working on plans for the reopening of community centers, swimming pools and other facilities, and we will provide additional details as those become available.

Visit the city of Las Vegas website at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/welcomeback to learn which parks and facilities are included in Phase 2.

I would like to take this time to congratulate students who are graduating amid the coronavirus pandemic.  Students worked hard to reach their educational goals, and many schools will have virtual graduations instead of traditional graduations. It is my hope that safe family celebrations will take place to create memories for our deserving students.

The coronavirus is still active, and many new cases around the world are reported daily.  It is still recommended to use safe practices of wearing a facemask in public, washing your hands frequently, and social distancing to help prevent the spread of the virus. I will continue to provide updates as circumstances are constantly changing.

Yours in service,

New Nevada 211 App Can Help

The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services has announced the release of a Nevada 211 app to help more Nevadans connect with the resources they need.

Nevada 211, a free service that includes information about health and human service programs and resources that are available throughout the state, can be accessed online at Nevada211.org, by dialing 2-1-1 or by texting your zip code to 898211.

“Nevada 211 has been a valuable resource for many years and while people are struggling with the impact of COVID-19 on their day-to-day lives, the addition of an app makes it even easier to help Nevadans find the resources they need,” said Nevada 211 Coordinator Jennifer White. “Everything that can be found on the website or by calling is now available in a convenient phone app.”

Money Management International (MMI) administers the program. The Nevada 211 app is free to download and available in the Apple App Store and Google Play.

NDOT

Washington Paving Upgrades And Lane Closures Continue Through June 30

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is undertaking a $1.12 million, half-mile-long upgrade of Washington Avenue (State Route 578) between A Street and Las Vegas Boulevard in downtown Las Vegas. Las Vegas Paving is the general contractor. The project calls for milling and placing new asphalt pavement as well as reconstructing handicap ramps. The right travel lane in each direction will remain closed 24/7, due to light traffic volumes, throughout the project. Construction is scheduled to finish by June 30.

Motorists should use caution while travelling through work zones, heed construction signage, and take alternate routes, if possible. NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors. For the latest state highway conditions, visit nvroads.com or call 511 before driving.

NDOT and its contractors continue vital highway construction and maintenance activities, keeping up Nevada’s transportation system for essential travel and supply chain deliveries. The department actively practices COVID-19-related public health and safety protocols, including social distancing of six feet or more and restricting groups to 10 or less, thereby keeping our team, families and communities safe and connected.

CCSD

FOOD SERVICE

CCSD plans to continue providing meals to students through June 30 at current food distribution sites. Meals at the majority of CCSD’s food distribution sites are served Monday-Friday from 7 to 10 a.m. and are free for any child 2-18 years old. To find a site near you or for times and locations of mobile food distribution sites, visit ccsd.nutrislice.com.

A federal extension allowed by the USDA gives CCSD the flexibility to continue meal service through August. CCSD plans to continue serving meals during the summer, but may adjust food distribution sites and times based on the demand for meals during the months of July and August. Any changes to CCSD meal sites after June 30 will be communicated to parents via a ParentLink message.

TECHNOLOGY

CCSD students who have school-issued Chromebooks and other devices are allowed to keep the devices over the summer. Schools will be making special arrangements for seniors to return their devices.

The district plans to continue distributing Chromebook devices to students throughout the summer in an effort to encourage independent learning. More information on distribution events will be provided as plans are finalized.

With the end of the school year, the Wi-Fi bus pilot program also concluded. For a list of community resources, including free Wi-Fi hotspots, click here.

SUMMER SCHOOL

It has been determined that 2020 summer school will be provided through distance education due to COVID-19. Summer school will be held virtually. Secondary students will see a decreased cost of $70 per half-credit. For more information, view the 2020 Virtual Summer School/Credit Retrieval page.

ESY

The Extended School Year (ESY) program, which supports summer learning for identified students with disabilities, will be provided through distance education beginning in June.

Parents with students participating in the ESY program through distance education will receive additional information through the U.S. mail in late May.

SAFEVOICE

SafeVoice is still monitored during the summer. The district continues to work with the Nevada Department of Education regarding SafeVoice tips. Reports may be made by calling 1-833-216-SAFE (7233) or online at http://safevoicenv.org.

SBA

In response to COVID-19, the Nevada Division of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) has implemented and launched a NEW filing system for Nevada residents who have been affected by the pandemic to receive benefits. This is completely separate from filing for traditional unemployment insurance benefits. Please read the important information on this page before filing a PUA claim on the designated platform.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) is a new temporary federal program that is part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. PUA is separate from unemployment insurance and provides coverage only to individuals who are not eligible for regular unemployment insurance.

PUA is available to Nevada workers who are unemployed, partially unemployed, unable to work or unavailable for work due to the COVID-19 pandemic and who are not eligible for other unemployment insurance benefits. This includes many different groups of people:

  • Self-employed
  • 1099 contract workers
  • Gig workers
  • Employees whose wages are not reported for unemployment insurance
  • Employees who have not earned enough wages or worked enough hours for regular unemployment benefits
  • Individuals who were going to start work but could not due to COVID-19 pandemic
