I continue to receive countless emails and phone calls from people sharing stories about how residents and businesses are working together to make an impact in the community. I am thankful to partner with the Quiet Storm Foundation tomorrow to provide a free entrée, compliments of Chef Stacey Dougan of the Simply Pure Restaurant located in the downtown Container Park. More information on this event is provided below.

Yesterday the governor announced that the Phase I reopening of Nevada will start this Saturday, May 9, at 12:01 a.m.  The Governor did add the caveat that the counties have the power to make the restrictions stricter if they prefer.

Restaurants may open, but employees must wear facemasks, capacity will be at 50% of fire code, tables must be six-feet apart, reservations are encouraged, customers waiting to be seated, must wait outside, bar areas will remain closed.

Barbershops and beauty salons may open with chairs either spaced at every other one, or with partitions between the chairs.  Employees must wear facemasks.

Retail outlets may open at 50% capacity of fire code.  This now includes all big-box stores and grocery stores.  The big-box outlets and grocery chains were exempted from this requirement before.  It will mean these stores not already limiting access, will be required to do so now.

Open-air malls may open.  Indoor malls may not.  However, indoor mall stores may provide curbside pickup of items.

Auto dealers may open with limited capacity in the showrooms.  Test drives may only take place with the customer and family in the vehicle.

Employers must require all employees who interact with customers to wear a facemask.

Operations Not Permitted To Open:

  • Bars
  • Nightclubs
  • Gyms
  • Yoga studios
  • Movie theatres
  • Community Centers
  • Body art/Body Piercing

No large gatherings.

Vulnerable populations should continue to shelter in place.

I encourage you to continue frequent hand washing practices, and to wear a mask and gloves in public to help keep you and your family safe. Ward 5 staff will return to the office on Monday, May 11.

Yours in service

The Quiet Storm Foundation and CJ Watson, retired NBA basketball player, partners with the city of Las Vegas and Councilman Cedric Crear to provide free nutritious meals tomorrow at the Doolittle Senior Center.

"I am proud to have food assistance support from the Quiet Storm and Chef Dougan of Simply Pure Restaurant during a time when food insecurity is high. I am also thankful that this is the third food distribution happening in fabulous Ward 5".

CCSD

CCSD Food Distribution Site

As warmer weather is on the forecast, the Clark County School District food distribution sites have adjusted to earlier serving times. This will help ensure that the food is maintained at a proper temperature and also to keep team members out of the heat as much as possible.

There are also changes to some Three Square Food Bank sites located at CCSD schools. Visit the website for more information.

National Teachers Week: May 4-8

I would like to honor teachers in celebration of National Teachers Week. Teachers make a huge difference in the lives of our children and their impact extends far beyond the classroom. I also recognize the innovative teaching methods that evolved out of the necessity to extend teaching from the classroom into the homes of our children. Additionally, I would like to recognize parents who have become "home" teachers in response to the COVID-19 restrictions.

NDOT

Public Feedback Sought for Statewide Transportation Project Process

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is inviting the public to comment on proposed changes to the process of planning transportation projects and improvements outlined in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The STIP is a fiscally constrained, four-year planning document listing federal and state-funded transportation projects, as well as regionally significant transportation improvements funded through local and/or state funds in accordance with the Federal Aid Highway Act and the Federal Transit Act.

These projects improve Nevada’s transportation system, including adding lanes, constructing new roads and intersection improvements along with certain road maintenance projects. It also includes transit, rail, pedestrian walkway and bicycle facility projects.

NDOT Freeway Sweeping

Interstate 15 Cleaning, Lane Restrictions May 9-10 in Clark County

CLARK COUNTY, NEV. – The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announces that maintenance crews will be sweeping the center medians and right shoulders along a 24-mile stretch of north and southbound Interstate 15 between Blue Diamond and Craig roads from 4 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. daily, May 9 and May 10, in Clark County. It will be a mobile operation, closing the right or left shoulder plus an adjacent lane.

Motorists should use caution while travelling through the work zone, heed construction signage, and take alternate detour routes, if possible. NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors. For the latest state highway conditions, visit nvroads.com or call 511 before driving.

NDOT and its contractors continue vital highway construction and maintenance activities upkeeping Nevada’s transportation system for essential travel and supply chain deliveries. The department actively practices COVID-19-related public health and safety protocols, including social distancing of six feet or more and restricting groups to 10 or less, thereby keeping our team, families and communities safe and connected.
