Dear Friend,
I was elected to be your voice and your representative for Ward 2. I am so glad I have heard from many of you and that my staff has been able to offer our assistance to many of your concerns. We have received and resolved over 180 issues from constituents ranging from public safety issues, concerns with our parks, to quality-of-life issues here in our community. Here are just a couple examples of long-standing problems that have been resolved:
-
Speed-limit reduction on Hualapai Way.
-
Update to Veterans Memorial Community Center's landscape.
-
A new parent drop-off lane at Doral Academy-Red Rock Elementary School to help ease traffic congestion.
-
I voted to pass ordinances giving law enforcement new tools to help them address the increasing problem of homelessness and to protect domestic violence victims.
-
I helped address our growing mental health crisis by providing a safeTALK Suicide Alertness course to help train advocates in our community.
In the upcoming year, one of the several projects I will be working on is the beautification of our public parks in Ward 2. I look forward to working with the residents of Ward 2 on improving our community. For ongoing issues, please see below for an update regarding the proposed marijuana dispensary (SUP-77274) at 9140 W. Sahara Ave. and the proposed Open Space Ordinance.
Special Use Permit - 77274
I want to thank all of you who have reached out to me and my office over the last few months regarding the proposed marijuana dispensary (SUP-77274) at 9140 W. Sahara Ave. On Dec. 10, the Las Vegas Planning Commission voted (4-1) in favor of the proposed marijuana dispensary. This issue will be heard before the Las Vegas City Council Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 9 a.m. at City Hall, located at 495 S. Main St. This is your last chance for your voices to be heard on the issue; I encourage you all to show up. Please park across the street in the city garage at 500 S. Main St. and bring in your ticket for validation.
Badlands
During my campaign, I ran on the promise of finding a fair and reasonable resolution to the issues I inherited involving the future of the properties where the now-closed Badlands golf course once operated. I am committed to that resolution being reached in a manner that involves all the parties.
I agree with many of the constituents living around the Badlands property whose primary concerns for resolving this issue are related to the crime and safety issues generated by the property continuing to deteriorate in the heart of Ward 2. I also believe, as the Councilwoman, I have the responsibility to do everything I can to protect the taxpayers, of not only of Ward 2, but all of the city of Las Vegas, from not only the endless legal bills but the potential multi-million-dollar settlement cost this litigation could cost the city.
One of the first steps to that resolution involves changes to the city's Open Space Ordinance. I requested these changes because I wanted to create a new ordinance that would continue to protect citizens by requiring all the same impact studies to take place and to keep the public role in the process, but to do it in a way that doesn't stagnate development. This ordnance does not just affect the one piece of land where Badlands used to operate, it affects over 100 spaces across the city.
These changes by no means create a rubber stamp for development at Badlands, or at any other open spaces across the city. Neither does it remove the public from having a role in the process. I strongly support the public meeting and notification parts of the ordinance, and I submitted a new ordinance that passed unanimously at the Planning Commission meeting Nov. 26, reinstating those provisions back in the city code. This ensures that the public has a role in the re-purposing of any open space in the city.
I look forward, as I do with any issue facing Ward 2, in working with all parties to find a fair resolution that resolves this issue once and for all.
I also ask that you do not hesitate to reach out to my office if you have any other issues or concerns. You can reach the Ward 2 office at ward2@lasvegasnevada.gov or 702-229-2420.

City Council Recognition
I have had the honor to recognize the following organizations and people.
So proud to have as my first Citizen of the Month Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer Darryl McDonald. He is a true public servant both on and off duty. He works to support many different nonprofits and serves also as a youth leader at his church. He is a true shining light for the city of Las Vegas.
In honor of #RecoveryMonth, I recognized the efforts of Las Vegas Recovery Center President and CEO Stuart P. Smith, as well as the efforts of @ForRecovery.
We had so many great people we recognized at City Council! I was able to recognize Principal George Anas and the staff at Walter Johnson Junior High School for all the great work they do. This International Baccalaureate Magnet/World School went from a 2- to a 5-star school and has an award-winning robotic team. We are so proud of the work they have done.
We recognized the city of Las Vegas Government’s Employee of the Month, Nicole Koerwitz, from our very own Ward 2 Veterans Memorial Community Center. I also had the privilege of recognizing all our Parks & Recreation Department for their positive work with our city’s children and the Camp Kindness Program.
It was a honor to recognize Awareness Is Prevention and its president, Lena Walther, for their efforts in combating human trafficking at City Council.
SMALL BUSINESS SUNDAY
As a former business owner myself, I know that our small businesses are the backbone of our economy. That is why I am proud to announce during my time in office the city has issued 318 business licenses in Ward 2. I will continue to promote Ward 2 as the best place to do business in the city of Las Vegas. Breakfast Buzz & Ward 2 Biz
I want the residents of Ward 2 to have an opportunity to share breakfast with me and voice their concerns or share any feedback they may have. This is why I have started a new Ward 2 tradition to host a monthly breakfast at various restaurants throughout our ward. I will continue this tradition in 2020 and ask everyone to join and bring their neighbors. Please see below for the upcoming Breakfast Buzz Jan. 11. If you are a restaurant owner in Ward 2 and would like to host my next Breakfast Buzz, please contact my office at ward2@lasvegasnevada.gov or 702-229-2420. I look forward to seeing you all there!
