After being sworn in as your City Council representative July 3, my team and I immediately went to work. Along with council briefings and orientations, we have been meeting with stakeholders and businesses regarding development, homelessness, public education and healthcare. We’ve been learning more about incredible incentives available to attract businesses to our city, and to the greatest extent possible, we will make ourselves part of those conversations to ensure that the growth continues to be thoughtful in our ward. In that effort, we welcomed Jeff Rogan as the new planning commissioner for Ward 1. We also have appointed Kathleen Bienerstein to our Senior Citizen Committee, and, for my office, Kimberly Reid and Dorian Stonebarger as my special assistants. Huge thank you to previous Ward 1 Planning Commissioner Vicki Quinn for assisting us as we transition.
I plan to use this newsletter to keep you informed of our progress, as well as opportunities and events that are happening in the greatest ward in the city.
With gratitude,
Brian Knudsen
City Councilman, Ward 1

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS FOR RESIDENTS
Home Security:
Get to know your neighbors. Be able to recognize someone who does not belong.
Watch for suspicious activity or individuals you do not recognize.
Lock your doors and windows at all times. We recommend two locking devices per door/window.
Check the lighting around your home to make sure it is working. Replace non-functioning equipment as soon as you are able.
Do not leave valuables visible from your windows so that those passing by can easily see them. Use curtains or blinds to limit a criminal’s view inside your home.
Check out any home improvement-type store and see what inexpensive items are available to upgrade your home security.
Vehicle Theft Prevention & Parking Lot Safety:
Lock your vehicle at all times
Do not leave your car running while you check your mailbox or do other "quick" things requiring you to leave your car unattended.
Remove any visible items from your vehicle. Do not use your car for storage.
Do not lend your keys to someone else.
Consider adding an anti-theft device to your vehicle.
If you do not have assigned parking, vary where you park your car to avoid patterns.
Be on the lookout for vehicles that look unattended or abandoned.
Do not allow yourself to be in close contact with someone who may be trying to get your attention or engage you in conversation.
Keep your hands as free as possible when traveling to and from your vehicle. This keeps your focus on your surroundings.
Common Areas:
Always be aware of your surroundings when doing the laundry, getting the mail, taking out the trash, etc.
Avoid people or situations that make you feel uncomfortable.
EMERGENCY NUMBER IS 9-1-1. NON-EMERGENCY NUMBER IS 3-1-1.
