Tyrone Thompson and Councilman Crear

Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson, longtime education and homeless advocate, and former city of Las Vegas and Clark County employee, passed away early Saturday morning, May 4, 2019, in Carson City, Nevada.

I am deeply saddened by Tyrone’s sudden death. He exemplified the true spirit of what it means to be a community servant. He lived life to the fullest and will be missed by his colleagues in the Nevada Legislature and by the residents of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas.

Tyrone will be remembered for his tireless efforts to advocate on education and homelessness issues. He sponsored several bills to establish a Nevada Interagency Advisory Council to address homelessness and housing. Additionally, this agency would require schools to take a restorative justice approach before suspending or expelling a student. Tyrone had a strong presence in schools, and participated in educational events throughout the year.

I am truly blessed to have called Tyrone a friend. The Ward 5 staff -- Kelly, Tanya, and Harry -- will especially remember the work he did to serve the residents of Ward 5. He led by example, and his legacy will live on in our hearts forever.
