2018 Las Vegas Book Festival To Honor Douglas Unger 

And Young Poets

Clark County High School Students Are Invited To Present Original Poems


LAS VEGAS – Aug. 1, 2018 – The 2018 Las Vegas Book Festival will celebrate the impact of mentor and professor Douglas Unger, as well as recognize young poets, Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St. The annual festival is free and open to all ages. 

 

Douglas Unger has been an advisor, teacher and colleague to some of the brightest authors, journalists and literary icons over the past three decades. The program, sponsored by The Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute, will feature:

- New York Times contributor Brittany Bronson,

- novelist and UNLV professor Maile Chapman,

Muslim Pakistani writer and Fulbright recipient Sorayya Khan,

short-story guru George Saunders,

debut novelist Paula Saunders,

-  O. Henry prize recipient Vu Tran and

- PEN America prize honoree Ernie Wang.

The program will start at 12:30 p.m. and conclude with Unger sharing insights of a life spent learning from his students.

 

Additionally, the festival will honor young poets through the Spark! Poetry Writing and Recitation Competition. Clark County high school students are invited to join by completing a registration form by Monday, Oct. 1. Participating students will be asked to prepare three original poems to be judged by a panel of poets, authors, educators and other community members; the top three highest-scoring students will receive cash awards.
