July 2020
Hello Friends! It has been a challenging few months for so many in our community. With Summer upon us and businesses reopening, we all want to get back to normal. Unfortunately, COVID-19 is still a serious concern and I encourage you to remain diligent in protecting your health and the health of others so that we do not regress. Please remember to wear a face covering in public, wash your hands, and stay home if you feel sick or are in a high-risk category. Together, we will get through this.

Desert Breeze was host to the first Drive-in movie in the history of the Park on June 19, 2020. The Drive-in movie was sponsored by Clark County Special Events and a generous donation of the outdoor screen by David Beck with TruVision Cinema. El Queso, Love Me Food and Kona Ice food trucks provided a variety of snack options, with social distancing service guidelines, throughout the show. The Drive-in movie brought families together in a safe socially distanced space for some nostalgic entertainment during difficult times. With digital movies a click away in most family living rooms, the outdoor Drive-in was a unique experience that gave families, friends and couples a free recreational option to safely leave the home. The featured movie, Lion King, was particularly fitting given its family theme and celebration of the special relationship between fathers and sons on Father’s Day weekend.

For many years visitors to Red Rock have dreamed of a safer, more accessible way to experience the area by bicycle - as well as by foot, pushing a stroller, in a wheelchair, and many other ways. The Red Rock Legacy Bike Trail is envisioned to fulfill that dream while connecting the entire Red Rock area from Charleston Boulevard in the north to Blue Diamond Road in the south. The northernmost section of the trail, connecting Summerlin to the Visitors Center, was funded last year through a Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) grant. Construction on that 5.5 mile section is expected to begin in late 2021 and take about a year to complete. A second FLAP grant was awarded this spring to fund the southernmost 5.2 miles of the trail connecting the intersection of Hualapai Way and Blue Diamond Road to the town of Blue Diamond. This project is becoming a reality through a partnership between Save Red Rock, BLM, NDOT and Clark County.
Law Enforcement and Fire agencies from Clark County, Henderson, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas are coming together again this year to crack down on illegal fireworks. Only "safe and sane" fireworks are allowed and only from June 28th through July 4th. Safe and sane fireworks are sold at booths around the valley which are inspected for compliance. The public is encouraged to report illegal fireworks online at www.ISpyFireworks.com or by calling 311.

As our community was going into quarantine, District F resident Annette Magnus thought it might be a good idea to have some extra food and supplies on hand in case anyone needed help. From that humble beginning Annette, along with friends Jeana Blackman Taylor and Donna West, created Vegas Community Pantry. From their garages they quickly grew a grass-roots network of volunteers and drivers that served over 1,500 families in the three months that they were fully operational. They have focused on people who may have fallen through the cracks and not been able to get assistance through other sources. They are continuing to respond to emergencies through the summer months. Thank you, Annette, for your hard work and helping to make District F a Fantastic place to live.

Traffic in the southwest is flowing a little bit smoother these days due to the completion of the road improvements on South Durango between Windmill Lane and Blue Diamond Road. Additional lanes and pavement replacement were just part of the project. The improvements also included traffic signal upgrades, new medians, storm drain improvements, sidewalk ramp upgrades, and resurfacing of the intersection at Blue Diamond and Durango. The completion of the project is excellent for motorists, but the other infrastructure improvements have increased the safety and accessibility for pedestrians and residents of the area.

On Saturday, May 30th, Commissioner Jones hosted a "Bike to the Ballot Box" event. Participants could choose the road bike or mountain bike option - but all trails led to the Blue Diamond Post Office where the cyclists proudly deposited their mail ballots.

William Andrews Clark was a teacher, soldier, mining baron, entrepreneur, salesman, Montana Senator, railroad magnate ...and one of the earliest developers of Las Vegas. In order to shorten the time it took to get the ore from his mines to the factories and shipyards on the west coast, he followed the suggestion of his younger brother, J. Ross Clark, and built the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad. He decided that the Las Vegas valley would be a perfect spot for a major depot and staging area for the railroad. In January 1905, Clark and his brother auctioned off over 600 subdivided lots for businesses and homes on 2,000 acres just east of the new train station. The subdivision was called the Clark Las Vegas Townsite and the auction that created it is considered the birth of Las Vegas. When the County was created from a portion of Lincoln County 4 years later, it was named Clark in honor of this founding father of our community.
