Energy Efficiency: Saving Money Paired with Local Business Responsibility
Commerce and industry make up over half of the electricity use in the Santa Fe community. Like other communities that value commercial reduction of CO2, Santa Fe County Sustainability Office and the Economic Development Division have teamed up with the Santa Fe Green Chamber, and the City of Santa Fe Economic Development department, alongside PNM to host a presentation luncheon on how to retrofit facilities for efficiency and receive big dollars for going green on Tuesday, February 25th, at the Hotel Santa Fe. Elected officials will be speaking, industry resources such as USDA, NM Tax and Revenue Department, and the Regional Development Corporation will also be available to answer questions. Six Santa Fe area businesses from the 2019 PNM Energy Efficiency Superstar list will be honored as well. "Being a good neighbor" is a vitally important concept in our climate crisis. If you are a business that is interested in saving money, believes in the good neighbor concept, and would like to reap the benefits of reducing your greenhouse gas emissions, we invite you to join us in learning about the ways you can receive green for going green in 2020!

Healthy soil holds more nutrients, stays moister, and sequesters more carbon. In our high desert environment, soil health is vital and will continue to increase in priority as we strive for resiliency in the face of climate change. Through composting, food scraps and green waste are converted to a valuable resource. And composting reduces up to 28% of waste in our landfills. Jump on board and be a part of the solution: the Santa Fe Compost Action Team, also known as SCAT, offers two tracks for advanced training and certification on composting to everyone willing to contribute to soil health, their own health, and the health of the community in their own backyard and/or in other collaborative community systems throughout the County. Also, SCAT holds multiple, scaled-down, 2-hour trainings throughout year that are also listed on their website.

A cause for celebration: the Clean and Green Retail Ordinance went into effect on January 1 in Albuquerque. Bernalillo County's new policy went into effect on the same day and also bans single use plastic bags and polystyrene containers. These important ordinances require consumers and store owners alike to rethink plastic and its indiscriminate use. Microplastics are polluting our food and water sources in unprecedented amounts as detailed in the Earth Day 2020 Microplastics and Drinking Water fact sheet. Bravo to Albuquerque and Bernalillo for doing their part in the good neighbor mission!
