Santa Fe County would like to remind residents if you are using a county park, trail, or open space your domestic animal shall be restrained by a leash and under the control of a person, unless otherwise posted.   Voice command or voice control is not the same as a leash. In addition to dogs, other domestic animals must be restrained (see details of County Ordinance No. 2001-1 below).

“As the weather is getting warmer we are seeing more hikers out on the trails and in the parks with their dogs.  We have had several complaints that there are dogs off of their leashes,  which have led to near attacks of other hikers or have created uncomfortable and hostel situations between trail users,” said Carol Branch, Volunteer Coordinator.  She continued, “It is a complete misconception that if you are in the County your dog can be off the leash.”

Santa Fe County Ordinance No. 2001-1 Section 4. Rules and Regulations

Domestic Animals:

(a)   Any dog or other domestic animal within a County park, trail, or open space area shall be restrained by a leash and under the control of a person, unless otherwise posted.

(b)   Horses shall be permitted only in designated areas and must be adequately controlled at all times.

(c)    It shall be unlawful for any person to allow any dog or other domestic animal under his control to disturb , molest, harass or chase livestock in a County park, trail, or open space area.

If you are using a trail and come across an owner who does not have their animal on a leash please contact 9-1-1 or call the non-emergency number at (505) 428-3710 to report the violation.

Santa Fe Botanical Gardens hike to Placer Peak in the Ortiz Mountain Preserve
Meet Location - The Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Santa Fe. The travel time from Santa Fe to the gate is nearly an hour.

Directions
From Santa Fe, take Cerrillos Road/Highway 14 south towards Cerrillos. Continue on Highway 14 past the turnoff for the village of Cerrillos, across the Galisteo River bridge, about a half mile further to the turnoff on the left for Goldmine Road/County Road 55. Note the collection of houses and a sign for the Preserve at this turnoff. Drive southeast along Goldmine Road/County Road 55 to where it ends (about six miles from Highway 14).

From the Old Pecos Trail (OPT) exit of I-25 drive, drive South until OPT dead ends at the stop sign at Old Agua Fria Road East. Turn left onto Old Agua Fria Rd. E, drive over cattle-guard where dirt turns into pavement.
