2024 San Juan County Fair: 140 Years of Memories
As many students are headed back to school, it's also fair time!
McGee Park is the venue for the 2024 San Juan County Fair- with all your favorite fair food, carnival, and -most importantly- livestock, agriculture, and entertainment! (Click the button below for the full schedule)
It takes a ton of work to prepare for, support, and clean up after the event each year- and much of the work is done by San Juan County's Parks & Facilities staff at McGee Park.
That's why the McGee Park staff is being recognized as the Grand Marshals of the San Juan County Fair Parade! We are so proud of the staff, and appreciate the work that goes into the fair every year, and every other event at McGee Park throughout the year (almost 100 events a year!).
While we hope that you are more focused on the events and exhibits, do take a minute to say 'thanks' to the staff who make it possible.
We will see you at the fair and fair parade!!

We all know that San Juan County Fire and Rescue already Serves A Stronger Community locally, but did you know they also assist with helping other communities across the nation?
During the wildfire season SJCFR’s wildland team could receive the phone call to pack up in moment’s notice, and head to a complex fire thousands of miles away from home. These firefighters potentially spend 14-21 days away from their families, roughing it in the wilderness, and working up to 16-hour days every day.
This year we have sent resources to the Indios Fire in Gallina NM, the South Fork Fire in Ruidoso NM, the Six Shooter Fire in Ignacio CO, and still covering local emergencies when not out on an incident. As the fire season continues to pick up this year, they have been keeping an eye on incidents in New Mexico, Northern California, Oregon, and other surrounding states because any minute SJCFR’s wildland team could be asked respond.

Congratulations to Lieutenant Jarrod Slindee, a recent graduate of FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia. The academy brings U.S. and international law enforcement leaders together for 10 weeks of executive level training and networking. During this time they study intelligence theory, management and leadership, behavioral science, and forensic science. Sheriff Ferrari presented Lieutenant Slindee with his completion plaque during a recent commission meeting. We look forward to seeing these new skills put to work!

Summer Intern Program Wrap-Up
Congratulations to all involved in the 2024 Summer Enrichment Internship Program as we conclude another successful internship season. Now in the fourth year, the program continues to thrive, offering invaluable experiences to our youth. For the 2024 program, San Juan County supported 80 interns and 4 adult coordinators for a six-week program running from June 17 to July 26. The success of this program would not be possible without the participation of our worksites. We are incredibly grateful to all the agencies and organizations that provide meaningful experiences for the students. Your support and dedication help shape the future of these young individuals, offering them practical skills, professional development, and a glimpse into their potential career paths. The Summer Enrichment Internship Program is a testament to our community’s commitment to the growth and development of area high school students. It is a collaborative effort that benefits everyone involved, from the students gaining hands-on experience, to the organizations enriched by fresh perspectives and energy. We look forward to closing out another successful summer and extend our heartfelt thanks to all who make this program possible. Together, we are building a stronger community.

AZTEC AND ITS RAILROADING HERITAGE: A Free Program Featuring Fred Friedman, New Mexico Railroad Historian
Join us for a FREE Chautauqua program by renowned railroad historian, Fred Friedman, offering little-known insights about this area's railroading people, equipment and the events that shaped Aztec's history- and its future! Friedman has an extensive background in the state's railroading history and is a frequent speaker for the New Mexico Historical Society and the New Mexico Humanities Council.
After Mr. Friedman's program, the museum will recognize the Atchison-Johnston Family in a brief rededication of the D&RG replica caboose in the Pioneer Village. In 1992, Ray Johnston had the caboose constructed for the museum. In 2016 and 2023-2024, his descendants have honored Ray's legacy with generous donations for preservation work on the caboose.
This program is made possible by a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council and all of our 60th Anniversary sponsors.
The museum is located at 125 N. Main Avenue, Aztec NM 87410. For information, call 505-334-9829.
