San Juan County Fire & Rescue
Dear readers, let me tell you the story of a Christmas miracle. This story has it all. Heroes, villains, good triumphing over evil, and a sprinkling of Christmas magic.
A tragedy happened in late December. A robbery left one Kirtland family with no Christmas. No tree, no decorations, no gifts, no who-pudding, no who-roast, and very little Christmas spirit. on Christmas Eve Eve, it was looking pretty bleak. When our friends over at the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management heard about a family who was in need of a miracle, they let us know a visit from the elves at San Juan County Fire & Rescue District 1 would brighten spirits and help dull the sting of a not-so-great Christmas. Alas, dear readers, not-so-great Christmas is not good enough for the elves at District 1. So they sprang to action to see what could be done. (I’m not actually sure that they move that fast when things are on fire, but I digress)
Instead of a visit from a fire truck, that fire truck was as laden as Santa’s sleigh. Toys and joy were delivered that afternoon.
Smiles on faces and tears, no doubt, shed,
Engine 130’s mission was complete. On Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer on Vixen, the crew flew off in the star-filled night (ok, they probably drove back to the station) and to all a good night.
It may seem like we are bragging, and honestly we are. Your humble author is neither a firefighter, nor one of the do-gooders, instead I am so proud of the men and women who sacrifice to protect our community, and the ones who take care of the community in good times and bad.
And that, dear reader, is the story of how a Grinch almost stole Christmas… and how the heroes arrived in just the St. Nick of time to save the day.

On the other side of the county, and no less special is a story out of District 5 where the district adopts a family every year to spread Christmas joy to. This year, with the help of the Country Rebels 4H, Jeremy (father Chance, District 5 firefighter and Grandfather Garrick, District 2 firefighter) tied 6 blankets to be donated to the cause. Jeremy is pictured here with brother Dylan.
We are proud of our community who always step up when there is a need.

San Juan County Sheriff's Office
On December 3, 2022, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Foundation held the annual Shop With Your Cops event! 101 children from all over San Juan County arrived at Target in Farmington for the opportunity to shop with law enforcement officers from the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, Bloomfield Police Department, Farmington Police Department, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, and New Mexico State Police.
This annual Christmas event has become a favorite among deputies, officers, volunteers, and various other law enforcement staff. Most of the officers and helpers at the event volunteer their time for this great cause. Sheriff Shane Ferrari stated, “Shop With Your Cops is an amazing program that is rewarding for everyone involved and we are honored to help organize this event every year. Events like this help us continue to build great relationships with the community that we serve every day.”
This year, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Foundation raised over $13,000 for Shop With Your Cops. San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Foundation Board President, Kelly Webb said, “Our Shop With Your Cops program is truly the most important program our Foundation supports. What a great way to start off the season of giving! It is always so heartwarming to see the smiles on these children's faces as they positively interact with law enforcement officers. Thank you to all that support this program!”
