October 9-15, 2022 is Fire Prevention Week
“Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”
Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.
Home fire escape planning and practicing
It is important for everyone to plan and practice TWO home fire escapes. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different.
Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them!
Smoke alarms
Smoke alarms sense smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger. Smoke alarms need to be in every bedroom, outside of the sleeping areas (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of your home. Do not put smoke alarms in your kitchen or bathrooms.
Choose an alarm that is listed with a testing laboratory, meaning it has met certain standards for protection.
For the best protection, use combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. These can be installed by a qualified electrician, so that when one sounds, they all sound. This ensures you can hear the alarm no matter where in your home the alarm originates.

San Juan County Treasurer Carol Taulbee
Tax time is coming soon and while no one is happy to receive a tax bill, we want to make sure bills are sent to the correct address. Last year, we received multiple trays of returned mail after tax bills went out! To reduce the number of tax bills sent to an incorrect address and returned, we need updated mailing addresses! (Yes, your taxes are still due even if the bill doesn't get delivered to the right address, sorry!)
There are two easy ways to make sure the bill comes to the right place.
First, you can sign up for e-billing and get your tax bill in your email.
Second, update your mailing address on a paper form, or online. It just takes a moment, and if you receive your tax bill somewhere other than the property address, you may need to update your account.

Don't Forget!
The 2022 tax notices will be mailed out the last weekend in October. If you do not receive your statement by the 2nd week in November please contact the San Juan County Treasurer’s office at (505) 334-9421.
Full Scale Drill Coming up!
Each year, the Office of Emergency Management plans an exercise to prepare local first responders in case of a large-scale emergency. After a pandemic pause, the full-scale drill is returning on October 5, 2022.
Starting at about 7:00 am, law enforcement, fire, and EMS teams from across the county will be pressed into simulated action. This year's scenario will focus on partner agency Enterprise Product's facilities in those areas.
You can expect first responder activity concentrated at E. Main and Herrera in Farmington, and on Arizona in Bloomfield. There is no need for concern if you see numerous first responders in the area or hear simulated emergency radio traffic on the scanner.
The San Juan County Office appreciates the partnership with Enterprise Products, as well as the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, San Juan County Fire & Rescue, Farmington Police, Farmington Fire, San Juan Regional Medical Center EMS and the patience of the public if this exercise disrupts your day.

In September, two informational meetings were held as a part of the Four Corners Freight Rail Line Feasibility Study.
The meetings were held to discuss the project’s scope, process and timeline that will be followed in examining the possibility and feasibility of bringing freight rail service to the Four Corners. One meeting was in Shiprock and the other in Farmington.
The meetings were hosted by the members of the study team: The Navajo Nation, San Juan County, The City of Farmington and Four Corners Economic Development. The rail study effort is being led by HDR Engineering, an international engineering firm with deep experience in railroad development projects – including a similar project in Northeastern Utah involving the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray in partnership with several Utah counties and cities.
If you missed the meetings, more information is available online at 4CornersFreightRail.com

Yard of the Month
Hey, its just barely fall, so we can still have a Yard of the Month! This month a big congratulations to Kevin Smith and Carmen Pacheco-Smith! There's a million fine-lookin yards in the world, and this one is bringing home the awards! Do you know of a property in the unincorporated parts of San Juan County that is beautiful?
The San Juan County Commission recognizes one yard or property every month for its beauty, unique style, or the hard work and dedication of its owner in making San Juan County beautiful. It doesn't have to be green, just well maintained! If you would like to submit a property for review, contact Code Compliance Officer Shana Wells at (505) 333-3130 to submit a nomination.
Let’s show our appreciation for those who set the example and make San Juan County Beautiful.

Mission of Mercy serves more than 500 people with free dental work
San Juan County recently held the State’s largest charitable event, the New Mexico Mission of Mercy, at McGee Park over the weekend of September 23-24. The free dental and medical clinic was organized by the New Mexico Dental Association Foundation in partnership with the New Mexico Dental Association. The numbers generated from the event were impressive:
- Over $800,000 in donated care
- 596 patients served
- 556 total volunteers (large number of county employees)
- 50 volunteer dentists
Kudos to all who made the event a success from setup to tear down and everything else in between. It was truly a team effort and many people benefitted from it tremendously.
