Greetings,
Phase 1 RCRA Investigation Report (RFI) Has Been Published by the Air Force
https://hwbdocuments.env.nm.gov/Kirtland%20AFB/KAFB4701/
The Phase 1 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Facility Investigation (RFI) report summarizes the Kirtland Air Force Base bulk fuel facility site history as well as investigation activies and interim corrective measures performed between 2000 and December 21, 2015. Investigation activities include the collection of 2307 soil samples, and the installation and testing of 284 soil vapor monitoring points and 134 groundwater monitoring wells. Interim corrective measures include the excavation and disposal of about 5,000 tons of contaminated soil, recovery of about 775,000 gallons of fuel from the subsurface, significant reduction of soil vapor concentrations, and startup of a groundwater extraction and treatment system designed to collapse the contamination plume away from drinking water wells. The Phase 2 RFI will include investigations and corrective actions from January 1, 2016 forward, and should be published in 2019 after additional investigations to fill data gaps are completed. The Phase 1 and 2 RFI reports will inform the Corrective Measures Evaluation scheduled to begin in 2020.
Geologic Field Trip – October 20, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Lower Tijeras Arroyo
The field trip will include sediments deposited by the ancestral Rio Grande that are host material for a major aquifer in the Albuquerque area. Project experts will discuss how the aquifer and the aviation fuel contamination plume are influenced by geology. No registration is required.

Public Meeting and Technical Deep Dive – November 15, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. - African American Performing Arts Center, 310 San Pedro Dr NE, ABQ
The technical deep dive will discuss groundwater plume capture modelling from 5 to 6 p.m. A project update will be provided from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by public comments and questions from 7 to 8 p.m..
Best regards,
NMED Kirtland Aviation Fuel Leak Cleanup Team
