Environment Department Awards South Central Solid Waste Authority for Safety Excellence
Santa Fe – The New Mexico Environment Department’s Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB) presented the Las Cruces South Central Solid Waste Authority with the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program award. The South Central Solid Waste Authority becomes one of nine SHARP participants in New Mexico, and the first in its industry.
On March 17, 2016, a ceremony recognizing the company’s accomplishments was held at the City of Las Cruces Utilities Board Room in Las Cruces, NM. Representatives from the OHSB presented the company with the award. Steve Mauer of South Central Solid Waste Authority said, “South Central Solid Waste Authority is proud to become a SHARP company.”
The On-site Consultation’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) recognizes business employers who operate an exemplary injury and illness prevention program. Vital elements of the program include management leadership and commitment to a safe working environment; employee involvement in implementing the health and safety program; worksite hazard analysis; prevention and control programs; and comprehensive safety and health training. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP from the New Mexico OHSB is an achievement that recognizes companies among their business peers as a model for worksite safety and health. Upon receiving SHARP recognition, the Environment Department exempts the worksite from programmed enforcement inspections during the period that the SHARP certification is valid.
OHSB Bureau Chief Robert Genoway stated, “It’s been a pleasure to work with South Central Solid Waste Authority in achieving their SHARP Certification. They have worked hard to make a safe and healthy work environment for their employees and they deserve this recognition.”
This facility is the first within their industry to receive a New Mexico SHARP award. South Central Solid Waste Authority employs approximately 60 workers at their facility. The company was established in 1992 and is currently managed by Director Patrick Peck and assisted by Regulatory Compliance Specialist Steve Mauer and Foreman Oscar Barrientos.
