Commission elects new leaders
Doña Ana County - One of the decisions the Board of County Commissioners made at their first 2024 regular meeting Tuesday, Jan. 9 was to elect a new Chair and Vice Chair.
By unanimous vote, District 1 Commissioner Christopher Schaljo-Hernandez became Commission Chair, picking up the gavel from District 4 Commissioner Susana Chaparro. District 2 Commissioner Diana Murillo returned to the Vice Chair role.
Commissioner Schaljo-Hernandez brings a wealth of experience, including having served as Vice Chair for the past year. A successful businessman with experience in non-profit organizations, Commissioner Schaljo-Hernandez has a proven track record of collaboration and a caring approach to help improve the lives of residents.
Commissioner Murillo served as the Board's Vice Chair in 2022 and brings broad government experience, including as Mayor of Anthony, small business entrepreneur and an advocate for women, youths, people with disabilities and a DWI Victim Impact Panel participant.
All five County Commissioners are elected officials who represent their respective districts and set policy for the County's governance, oversee its budget and address residents' needs and concerns.
