BernCo Opens Warming Center for South Valley Residents Impacted by Power Outages
With temperatures expected to drop this evening, Thursday, November 7th, and ongoing power outages, BernCo has opened Westside Community Center to South Valley residents living within unincorporated Bernalillo County, outside the Albuquerque city limits, who have been impacted.
The warming center at 1250 Isleta Blvd. SW, will be staffed by BernCo employees and will offer a safe and heated space for individuals and families without power. The center will also provide water and snacks to guests. Any questions can be directed to 505-314-0176.
Winter Weather Information
Bernalillo County will follow the delay and closure schedules of Albuquerque Public Schools (APS). In instances where APS is not in session, decisions regarding delays, early dismissals, or closures will be made by the County Manager. Updates on closures and delays will be posted on Bernco.gov. Stay informed about road conditions at www.nmroads.com and APS school delays and cancellations at APS website.
Bernalillo County offices will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day.
Monday, November 11
A parade kicks off at 9 a.m. at USS Bullhead Memorial Park,1606 San Pedro Dr SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, and ends at 10 a.m. at New Mexico Veterans Memorial Park. 1100 Louisiana SE, for the annual Veterans Day Ceremony from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The public is encouraged to attend to celebrate and honor veterans and their service. Music provided by Dukes of Albuquerque Concert Band.

Tuesdays, 10 to 11:30 a.m. through December 10, 2024 and performance Tuesday, December 17, 10 a.m.

Free Enhance Fitness Classes
Participate in free exercise classes at Rio Bravo Senior Center. Classses are designed for older adults 50+and are M/W/F from 9 to 10 a.m. Baseline assessments are included to gage progress of participants as evidence based classes are proven to enhance mobility, fitness and help reduce falls.

Chair Yoga Classes
Chair Yoga is known to improve flexibility, balance, bone and muscle strength. It helps reduce stress, combat depression and anxiety. Older adults 60+ are invited to Free Chair Yoga classes at the following Bernalillo County Senior Centers:

Spanish Conquest of the New World
Tuesday, November 12, 2024 - 4:15 to 6:15 p.m.
How did a peninsula country in Western Europe conqueror two continents in the Western Hemisphere? This question will be answered and discussed with a short documentary with a specific case study of conquest by the Spanish in the New World. In addition, there will also be a discussion on the ramifications of Spanish conquest in the later Spanish settlement of the New Mexico colony.

The City of Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs continues to serve senior lunches. Lunches are distributed between 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Monday thru Friday and are available at senior and multigenerational centers. Seniors 60* must make reservations directly with the Senior Center 24 hours in advance. Lunches are free to seniors 60 and over. See the contact information for locations and phone numbers.
Home Delivered Meals
Persons interested in home delivered meals may contact the City of Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs directly at 505-764-6400.
*The City of Albuquerque/ Bernalillo County Area Agency on Aging receives all federal and state funding allotted to Bernalillo County Planning and Service Area to fund services for seniors.

Gas Company Assistance
New Mexico Gas Company has established a $1.2 million assistance fund to help income-qualifying residential customers and small business owners who have fallen behind on their bills because of issues related to the pandemic.
Residential customers can apply for assistance through New Mexico Gas Company’s Heat New Mexico program. This residential assistance program provides qualified residential customers with a one-time payment of $150 toward their natural gas bill. Information can be found at www.nmgco.com/en/assistance.

The Bernalillo County Quality of Life Community Fund supports responsible and effective philanthropy to enrich community wellness, and social and cultural experiences of Bernalillo County residents and visitors. Operated in partnership with the New Mexico Community Foundation, the Bernalillo County Quality of Life Fund provides an opportunity for the Bernalillo County business community and local residents to contribute to the quality of life, health, and well-being of its citizens.
