When I decided to run for County Commissioner, it was with a distinct purpose in mind, to address our behavioral health and substance use disorder needs in Bernalillo County. Together we can tackle this public health epidemic that harms our families and our communities.

There is opportunity every day to connect to others in the community, raise awareness, and join forces to tackle the fentanyl epidemic, together. 

We start the powerful week off on Sunday, October 22, with a film screening of All the World is Sleeping at Highland Theater, followed by a panel discussion presented by Bold Futures NM and families impacted by substance use disorder.  Reserve your seat at the screening now.

If you call New Mexico home, you love someone who has struggled with addiction, now it the time to show up in solidarity. Whether you are in the struggle, have a loved one in the struggle, or you just care enough and want to see our communities and streets have relief from this epidemic, we need you now.

Our communities have been under attack.  From the gutting of our behavioral health providers by former Governor Susana Martinez, to pharmaceutical companies intentionally attacking communities across New Mexico, this is a fight that is going to take all of us!

Together we can build the BernCo all of us want and deserve to live in.

Fentanyl Awareness Week begins on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. with a movie screening of "All the World is Sleeping" at the Hiland Theater followed by a community discussion.

The information sessions begin Oct 23 and run through Monday, Oct. 30 at four locations in Bernalillo County and Sandoval County. The topics are:

• Overdose Education and Naloxone Training
• Navigating Treatment Services
• Emerging Drug Trends
• Correlation between Human Trafficking and Substance Use
• Helping Family Members with Addictions
• Educate & Equip Employers in the Fentanyl Crisis
• Stigma | Unlocking Empathy
• Peer Support, the Gift of Perspective
• Gender-Based Violence & Toxic Masculinity / Trauma Healing
• Native American Cultural Gathering & Letting Go

The workshops will be held at BernCo Commission Chambers in Albuquerque, the Gateway Center in Albuquerque, APS Berna Facio Center and Sandoval County Chambers in Bernalillo.

Fentanyl Awareness Week will conclude with a candlelight vigil on Sunday, Oct. 29 at One Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque beginning at 5 p.m.

Please join us that evening for the lighting of candles in remebrance of loved ones lost to drugs and in support of those who continue to struggle from its effects.

The state of New Mexico, like many other states around our country, has experienced a surge in overdose poisonings due to the unintended use of the drug Fentanyl. We, like many other states, have also seen the landscape of addiction and subsequent crime change in our communities. 

Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque, through separate initiatives, found ourselves on a similar path and joined together to make a difference. After a few months of strategic planning the keepNMalive campaign was brought to life. The intent behind the use of “NM” is that we all, as New Mexicans, all face the issues related to this epidemic. To address these issues, we all must come together to make a difference in our state.

The campaign is not isolated to Bernalillo County or the City of Albuquerque. We expect and encourage all New Mexico to make a stand in addressing the effects fentanyl is having in our communities.
