The Vikings Connection to NM Families
The Vikings (from Old Norse Vikings) were the Norse explorers, warriors, merchants and pirates who raided, traded, explored and settled in wide areas of Europe, Asia and the North Atlantic islands from the late eighth to the mid-eleventh century. These Norsemen used their famed long ships to travel as far east as Constantinople and the Volga River in Russia, and as far west as Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland, and as far south as Al-Andalus (most of modern-day Spain and Portugal). This period of Viking expansion – known as the Viking Age– forms a major part of the medieval history of Scandinavia, Great Britain, France and the rest of Europe. The connection between certain New Mexican families and the Vikings will be explored.

The Dark Ages: The Rise of a New World Order (500/750 A.D.)
By the 5th century, the Roman Empire crumbled from within, unable to sustain its own borders, a power vacuum was left in its wake. With no unified power source to claim these lands, chaos abounded as roaming warlords and violent bands of warriors circulated throughout Europe. This downshift in progress left Europeans more susceptible than ever to the ravages of natural disaster and disease. Waves of warfare together with famine, plague, erratic weather patterns, and persecution led to a centuries-long era of economic, political, and cultural decline. This class chronicles the backward recession into violence and disarray, tracing the rise of major leaders and conflicts from Greece and Turkey to the east to France and Spain in the west. Examine important figures in history such as: Alaric, Emperor Justinian, and Charles Martel; to the men and women who valiantly tended the flames of justice, knowledge, and innovation including Charlemagne, St. Benedict, Empress Theodora, and other brave souls who fought for peace and enlightenment.
Classes are presented by Paleographer and Genetic Genealogical Researcher, Angel de Cervantes.
Short films will be shown to trace the history of the ancient civilizations discussed in each session.
