Bernalillo County Public Art announces a call for artists and artist teams to submit proposals for a temporary chalk mural for the 9th Annual Bosque Chile Fest, a New Mexico True event.
What: The Bosque Chile Fest, a celebration of music, art, culture and all things chile. Highlights include food, demonstrations, artisan vendors, and live music by Baracutanga, Son Como Son, Nosotros, Hook and the Huckleberries, Darren Cordova, Tylor Brandon, Nathaniel Krantz and more!
Anticipated Attendance: 5000+ over the two-day event.
Event Dates: • Saturday, Aug. 19, 3 - 8 p.m. • Sunday, Aug. 20, 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Event Location: Expo NM, Villa Hispana
Project Details: • Artists will submit examples of previous work and a written proposals for the project. • The selected artist or artist team will create two 4’ x 8’ chalk murals on a double-sized board to be displayed at the event. • The mural will welcome guests as they arrive, and the reverse side will thank them for attending as they leave the event • The mural should include a space for visitors to pose for interactive, “instagramable” photographs that can be used for event promotion. • Additionally, the artist will make three sidewalk chalk artworks (3’ x 3’) at highly trafficked public locations (locations TBD) that will serve to promote the event. • The mural theme is “Red or Green?” • The chalk artworks will be documented by a professional photographer and the photos will be framed and added to the Bernalillo County Betty Sabo public art inventory to be displayed in a county facility
Deadline for Submission: Friday, July 21 at 11:59 p.m. Notification: Artists will be notified of the selection by Tuesday, July 25.
Submission Guidelines: • Artists must be at least 18 years old. • Artwork for the festival must be appropriate for public viewing • Artist must provide their own chalk for the project • Bernalillo County will provide the 4’ x 8’ chalkboard for the project designs • The Artist is required to complete the three sidewalk chalk pieces by August 10 for early promotion of the event • Only non-oil-based soft chalk/pastels in a solid form may be used for sidewalk painting. Acrylic paints, spray can pastels, oil-based pastels, hard pastels, etc. are not acceptable • The Artist will display the 4’ x 8’ chalk mural at the festival and will also present a demonstration of the technique of chalk drawing art during the event. An additional small chalk board will be provided. (Demonstration times TBD)
Please submit the following for consideration: • Contact information: Address, phone #, email, and website if applicable • 3-5 images, from one or more angles, of previously completed artworks in chalk, which may include close ups to demonstrate craftsmanship or technique. Submit images in JPEG format. (See below for size limitations) • Biographical information about the artist • A small sketch of the main chalk mural concept • A written description of the mural concept (no more than 500 words total)

If you send multiple emails to accommodate your submission, please include in the subject area of your email your last name and the sequence (Example: Attn: Bosque Chile Fest Chalk Art, Smith 1 of 3)

All applications will be reviewed based on demonstrated experience to complete a large-scale work in chalk, the quality/theme of the sketch of the design, and the written description of the concept
