 "Luminaria" by Gordon Huether
Gordon Huether learned an appreciation for art from an early age from his father. Later, as an artist, Gordon was determined to create a lasting impression on the world around him through his work. After receiving his first public art commission from the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute, Gordon continued to create large-scale works of art and focused on the message one can deliver through artistic expression.
Gordon Huether created a non-traditional memorial for victims of gun violence for Bernalillo County in 2021. His piece, Luminaria, was designed to provide an uplifting and serene space for victims and their families. Many influences helped shape this piece and include native plants, and imagery such as flowers, birds and butterflies often illustrated in papel picado as well as items of remembrance found in pop-up memorials.
“Each of the three sculptures will be a different color, referencing the brilliant and uplifting colors of both the barrel cactus flowers and the papel picado folk art; and will be illuminated from within like lanterns, shining as a beacon of joy and love for all those in suffering both day and night.” - gordonhuether.com
Bernalillo County invites you to visit Gordon Huether’s work in person by visiting the Steve Schiff District Attorney Building located at 520 Lomas Blvd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.

About Us
Bernalillo County's Public Art Program was established in 1992 with the adoption of the county’s Art in Public Places Ordinance, enacted in 1992 (revised 1997).
The county's Public Art Program believes that public art can:
- Energize public spaces, inspire thought, and transform live, work and play places
- Heighten awareness, question assumptions, transform the landscape, express community values, and help define a community’s identity
- Have an economic benefit for a community by attracting visitors, and by supporting artists and local businesses
The program currently has more than 500 works of art, most of which can be viewed via the Public Art Collection Story Map and Betty Sabo Inventory Story Map.
