Sunport Boulevard Extension Public Art Project proposal by Karen Yank
After extensive review of 22 proposals, a local public art selection committee has chosen artist Karen Yank as the finalist for the Sunport Boulevard Extension Public Art Project. The selection committee went through three rounds of jurying to pick the finalist for the project. The committee first selected three semi-finalists from the 22 proposals submitted by New Mexico-based artists. The three semi-finalists were Edward Haddaway, Anthony Hyde, and Karen Yank. The semi-finalists were asked to develop and present detailed concepts and designs for the project to the local selection committee and the public on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022.
After the presentations, the committee scored each proposal, and the public was invited to provide feedback during a period of public comment. After scores were calculated, the selection committee found it necessary to enter a third round of jurying as artists Karen Yank and Anthony Hyde scored within less than half a point of each other after the second round of jurying. Karen Yank’s proposal received the majority of votes in the third round of jurying. The selection committee presented the results of the jurying to the Bernalillo County Arts Board on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, and the board voted to approve the selection committee’s recommendation of Karen Yank as the finalist.
Artist Karen Yank is the recipient of the 2022 New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. She has created more than 50 large-scale public sculptures to date. These projects have resulted in several awards including for Aesthetics and Public Involvement; the PRIDE Award from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, the Golden Cumbre Award from the New Mexico Public Relations Society of America, and the Americans for the Arts Kris Art of Giving Award.
The artist will now enter into an agreement with the county to create the new, monumental public artwork. The public art project has a budget of $60,000 and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2023. Before work begins, the artist will collaborate with the local community to finalize some of the design elements for the artwork and will work with local schools in the area to create images of the cultures and landscapes near the Sunport to be included in the piece.
The Sunport Public Art selection committee consisted of six members including neighborhood association representatives from near the Sunport, county Arts Board members, a representative from the Albuquerque Sunport, and the project’s engineer.
