Eric Hein of Tijeras, New Mexico is requesting a memorial bench at Carlito Springs Open Space in the East Mountains to honor the memory of his 16-year-old son Riley Eric Hein, who was killed in a tragic traffic accident in 2015 when a semi-truck drifted into his lane on a curve on I-40 and Riley’s car became wedged underneath the semitrailer. The semitruck dragged Riley’s car for a half a mile and both car and semitrailer caught fire. Riley died on the highway just below Carlito Springs from injuries sustained in the fire. Carlito Springs was Riley’s favorite place to hike and sit and, as a 10-year old cub scout, his picture was featured in an open house for Carlito Springs. The memorial bench would be located where others could also sit and reflect.
