Bernalillo County has been awarded $113,636 by the New Mexico Environment Department as a recipient of the Recycling and Illegal Dumping (RAID) grant for fiscal year 2023, which began July 1. In addition to Bernalillo County, 15 communities, tribes and pueblos around the state received grants totaling $800,000, for 19 projects that will improve the quality of life and environment, particularly in rural areas.
The campaign promotes specific messaging on various media outlets, TV, radio, billboards, social media, mailers, digital display ads on various media, and YouTube. The goal of the campaign is to encourage behavior change and educate the community about existing disposal and recycling options.
The RAID grant is made possible through a special revenue fund derived from a fee on motor vehicle registrations. Approximately $800,000 is available through the fund annually. Between 2006 and 2022, the New Mexico Environment Department awarded 353 RAID grants totaling more than $11.2 million.

SAFETY TIP: Keep a keen eye out for children when driving now that school is back in session and Halloween trick-or-treaters will be wandering neighborhoods. Teach children to keep a safety buffer zone of at least 15 feet between them and any WM trucks serving the community.
RECYCLING TIP: Americans buy an estimated 600 million pounds of candy for Halloween each year. That’s a whole lot of candy wrappers that will need to be disposed of. Remember candy wrappers are NOT recyclable, because they are made with mixed materials and are also too small to be captured by automated recycling sorting machines. Be sure to toss all candy wrappers in the trash.
