The County Commission approved a one-time $300,000 appropriation which will support the overall mission of Historic Fairview Cemetery, located at 700 Yale Blvd SE, in preserving and restoring areas of the cemetery that provide the final resting place for approximately 500 veterans.
A memorandum of agreement has been entered into between Bernalillo County, the New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services (NMDVS), and the Historic Fairview Cemetery. The county will provide $300,000 by transfer to the NMDVS, to be used exclusively to benefit the Fairview Cemetery project. The NMDVS will work to provide necessary services to accomplish as much of the following as possible with the transferred funds:
|
- build an 18-inch block wall around the designated areas
- xeriscape
- restore the existing “Unknown Dead” monument
- restore and align grave markers for veteran gravesites
The burial areas that will be restored and preserved, where 312 veterans are buried, include American Legion 1, where veterans were buried from 1923-44, American Legion 2, where veterans were buried from 1944-88, and a third area with veterans located in the South County Section, owned by Bernalillo County. There are other veterans buried throughout the entire Fairview Cemetery.
The goal is to complete the restoration project by Memorial Day 2023.
