Please join Muertos y Marigolds in conjunction with the Gutiérrez Hubbell House and Bernalillo County Open Space for our community ofrenda exhibit opening. Community organizations and schools will created community ofrendas that will be featured at Gutiérrez Hubbell House from Friday, October 7 – Saturday, November 12.
Ofrendas Comunitarias: Muertos y Marigolds opens Friday, Oct. 7 at 5pm at Gutiérrez Hubbell House History & Cultural Center. The exhibit will bring over a dozen artists, community members, local organizations, and schools to remember our dead and share in mourning and celebration of our community and loved ones through the creation of altars, a central part of the celebration of Day of the Dead.
The exhibit features altars honoring different people and causes important to South Valley residents and organized around the Muertos y Marigolds 2022 theme of “¡Escucha! ¡La Lucha No Es Mañana!” “What is Your Fight??”
The exhibit runs Friday, Oct. 7 – Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022 and is on display during museum open hours of 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Thursday – Saturday.
Altars feature traditional elements of the offerings made on Día de los Muertos, a tradition originating in Indigenous communities of central Mexico, which then spread and became an important Mexican observance, through the country and diaspora.
Today, Día de los Muertos is celebrated widely across Mexico, Central America, and in diasporic and descendent communities worldwide, on November 1-2. Altars include objects such as framed photos, cempasúchil or marigold flowers, sugar skulls, water, candles, offerings of favorite foods and beverages, incense, papel picado, and special treats like pan de muertos. Each element brings both symbolic and personal significance.
This exhibit was conceived with and co-curated with the Muertos y Marigolds South Valley Dia de los Muertos Celebration committee.

Author's Talk: Albuquerque's Far South Valley with Francelle Alexander
Saturday, Oct 22, 2 p.m.
If you know Albuquerque history, you're sure to have come across prolific local author Francelle Alexander's writing. Now is your chance to be one of the first to read her newest volume Albuquerque's Far South Valley: Pajarito & Los Padillas. Join us for a talk and your chance to get a copy of this book released just this month!
About the book:
An overview of two Hispanic villages south of Albuquerque, New Mexico from the time of early Spanish settlement until the present. Although New Mexico has numerous villages from this time, each has its own unique story. Short biographies and genealogies are included of families, both the wealthy and the less wealthy. These people lived and persevered through land grant disputes, Indian raids, disease, droughts, floods, and the influx of new people, and they managed to preserve their culture, language, and identity.
About the author:
Francelle Alexander is a native New Mexican, having grown up in Albuquerque, both the South Valley and the North Valley. She attended UNM where she earned her B.A. and M.A. After a career in the Albuquerque Public Schools, she lived and worked overseas. For almost ten years, she was able to travel and study villages in Asia and Europe. Upon returning from abroad, she began extensive research on the villages of Peralta and Los Pinos (now Bosque Farms).
