Zahra Marwan is a full-time illustrator based in Albuquerque where she focuses on creating artwork that stems from the heart. She draws inspiration from the smallest items of a daily routine to the beauty of a winter snow and her memories.
“I build my illustrations with a delicate combination of random thoughts, memories from the past, and little bits of reminiscences. I want to show the texture of how I feel. The thread of my soul with all of its complexity and depth of feeling.” Artist's quote is provided by an interview with the Harwood Art Center. To view the interview and for additional information, please visit the Harwood Art Center, Art at a Distance: Stories with Zahra Marwan here.
Originally from the desert shores of Kuwait City, Zahra moved with her family to Albuquerque when she was a child. Her work, “Two Desert Illustrations” references these dynamic desert regions along with their uniquely different cultures.
As a student at the University of New Mexico, Zahra was able to spend a semester in Paris that developed into a three year stay to study visual arts. Later, Zahra collaborated with printmakers at the Tamarind Institute and as a resident at the Harwood Art Center, she has been able to showcase her work throughout the Southwest and even globally in galleries in Italy and Kuwait. You can view her artwork "And the costume shop at the National Institute of Flamenco Arts is making masks" on the second floor of Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square.
Zahra recently debuted her own children’s book in March 2022, Where Butterflies Fill the Sky which depicts the story of her move from one desert to another.
