Get Your Pet Chipped
The upcoming holiday is a common day when many pets go missing due to the loud noise of fireworks. The huge booms are scary for dogs and cats; they often run away from the noise even if it means escaping the safety of their own homes. If your pet escapes and it’s not microchipped, it can be very difficult for any shelter to help you.
It’s also important to have your pet's microchip information up-to-date. If you don’t remember what company you used, Bernalillo County Animal Care Services can do a quick scan on your pet and help you figure out what company was used to microchip your pet.
Bernalillo County’s lost and adoptable pets are the highest priority. With a major increase of pets coming in, we are currently over 200% capacity. The Animal Care and Resource Center located at 3001 Second St. SW, Albuquerque NM 87105 is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1 p.m.-5:30 p.m.

Current burn restrictions to remain in place
Recent rain showers have helped ease the dry conditions in all areas of Bernalillo County, including the East Mountains, and is allowing the county to reopen all open space areas at Noon., Tuesday June 28. The only the exception is Carlito Springs which remains closed due to renovations.
The burn ban enacted by the County Commission in May on open burning and fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the county, outside the city limits of Albuquerque remains in effect. Open burning is any fire that is not in a contained space such as a campfire or piled brush. The fireworks ban restricts the sale and use of aerial fireworks.
East Mountain open space properties reopened to the public:
- Carlito Springs (remains closed for renovations)
- Ojito de San Antonio, 30 San Antonio Dr, Cedar Crest, 87008
- Sabino Canyon, 34 Forest Rd 252 Tijeras, 87059
- Sandia Knolls, 35 Canyon Rd, Sandia Park, 87047
- Sedillo Ridge (remains closed), 193 Brannan Rd, Tijeras, 87059
- Tijeras Creek, 5 Public School Rd, Tijeras, 87059
All other county facilities, such as parks and walking areas, are open to public use.

RECYCLING TIP: About 90 percent of all aluminum beverage cans dropped into recycling bins are used to make new cans. And, that drink can you recycle today is back on the shelf as a new can in less than 60 days. Yet, only about 50 percent of all beverage cans popped open and emptied are actually recycled. We can all do better and work to recycle every can we use. After all, aluminum is endlessly recyclable - meaning it can be reused again and again to save natural resources.
