Bernalillo County leaders, including several commissioners, along with state legislative leaders representing districts in Albuquerque, toured the Amazon fulfillment center located in the Atrisco Vista corridor on the county’s West Side.
The Bernalillo County Economic Development Department, in tandem with Commissioner Debbie O’Malley, was instrumental in the attraction of Amazon to the county and more specifically, the Atrisco Vista corridor. The County Commission approved $6.5 million that was used for upgrades to roads, lighting and other infrastructure in the Atrisco Vista area to facilitate the new construction and attract future business expansion in the area.
The Amazon fulfillment center was completed and opened in 2021 and employs roughly 1000 people. Since opening Amazon reports an employee retention rate of about 70%. The fulfillment center is roughly 2.4 million square feet in size.
In addition, Amazon has a distribution center in the county and is in process of building an air hub at the Albuquerque Sunport.

Wednesday, June 8 from 5 – 6:30 p.m.
South Valley Economic Development Center, 318 Isleta Blvd, SW
Bernalillo County, in conjunction with the Partnership for Community Action and the Rio Grande Community Development Corporation, is hosting an open house and informational session about the Brownfield and the South Valley Business Incubation Programs.
A brownfield site is a property where development, expansion, or reuse may be complicated by the presence, or potential presence, of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Assessment Program awarded a $600,000 grant to Bernalillo County to assess selected properties initially in unincorporated Bernalillo County. But, if funding is available, other locations in Bernalillo County could be considered, including within Albuquerque city limits.
The informational session is free and open to the public and will feature food and fun.
The county has launched a new website designed to educate the public about the Brownfield program and to spur community revitalization. The website is also where property owners, or citizens, can begin the application process to have a site considered for an environmental site assessment.
