NACo recognized Clerk Stover for her outreach program titled “We’re All in This Together: Voting Through the 2020 Pandemic” in the category of Civic Education and Public Information. In 2020, COVID-19 impacted the lives of every person in our country. It was clear that people felt anxious about getting out to vote in the 2020 elections.
The program provided information about voting procedures, explained what COVID-safe practices were being implemented, corrected misinformation, and ensured voters that they could count on a safe election. The program consisted of Clerk Stover creating and distributing informative Public Service Announcements (PSAs) on the Clerk’s social media platforms throughout the 2020 election cycle.

The Bernalillo County assessor has sent county property owners their 2022 notice of value statements (NOV). The statements, mailed on May 2, show the assessed value for residential and non-residential real property, manufactured homes, commercial properties and vacant land. Values are effective as of Jan. 1, 2022, pursuant to Property Tax Code Section 7-38-7 NMSA, and based on the analysis of prior year market activity for current and correct values as part of the ad valorem appraisal process.
Applications for tax-savings programs can be downloaded from the forms page at www.bernco.gov/assessor.
Included in the envelope with the NOV statement is an “Understanding your Notice of Value” insert that addresses some of the most frequently asked questions about the property assessment process, available property tax-saving programs, an example calculation of an assessed value for a property, and the calculation for property taxes.
Property owners who disagree with the information contained on their NOV statement have 30 days from the mailing of the NOV to appeal. The deadline to file a protest form with the Assessor’s Office is June 1. An appeal checklist and other important information to assist with the appeal process can be found when visiting the protest/appeal process page. Property owners have the option to appeal by filing a protest electronically using the nine digit “ONLINE PROTEST ACCESS CODE” found on the bottom of the NOV statement to access the portal. A standard protest form can also be accessed online by downloading it from the Assessor’s Office website at www.bernco.gov/assessor.

County program is recognized by the National Association of Counties
The Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services has been recognized with an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The award honors innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.
NACo recognized the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (L.E.A.D.) program as a recipient of the 2022 Achievement Awards. The LEAD program expands the county’s efforts to identify, respond to, treat, and support those impacted by the use of illicit opioids, stimulants, and other drugs through pre-arrest programming for individuals who commit low-level, non-violent, drug-related offenses. LEAD is supported by a Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Abuse Program (COSSAP) grant from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and was developed as part of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) legislation.

Memorial Bench to Honor Salvador Torrez
The proposal seeks to place a park bench along a walking trail near Second and Willow Road NW in the North Valley.
The bench would be dedicated in honor of former Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation employee Sal Torrez, who worked for the county 25 years before passing away July 8, 2021, four months after he retired from the county.
Sal Torrez served as an assistant area foreman for the north area of Bernalillo County. Co-workers say he took pride in providing a safe and joyful experience for those who spent time in county parks and open spaces.
A plaque would be placed on the bench stating:
In Loving Memory of Salvador Torrez 25 years of Service for Bernalillo County Parks, Rec. & Open Space Land Management “To my buddies, come sit with me; rest awhile.”

RECYCLING TIP #1: Maintain a safe distance when keeping it friendly with the waste collection drivers operating in your neighborhood. Waving to drivers definitely brightens their day but please remember to keep a safe buffer zone of at least 15 feet between you and the truck when greeting them.
|
|
RECYCLING TIP #2: Do not bag your recyclables. Empty items directly into your recycling container. It’s the best thing you can do to ensure items get a second life. If you collect your recyclables in a bag, simply empty the items directly into your final recycling container and reuse the bag! |
