Bernalillo County is contracting with a local hotel to house vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness and 42 of the available 47 rooms are filled as temperatures continue to drop.
The county coordinates with social service agencies that refer clients to the hotel for temporary housing. The allotted hotel space is currently accommodating 69 individuals, including 13 children.
Everyone referred to the hotel is required to meet with case management to work toward securing long-term housing. The county provides daily breakfast, lunch and dinner for the clients.

This is an exciting program open to children of all reading levels.
Reading to animals gives children an opportunity to gain confidence and practice their reading skills, while comforting our shelter animals.
During the half hour session, readers will work one-on-one with an adult or parent/guardian to practice their reading skills.
Each participant will then get to choose the pet from a provided list that they would like to read to for their session. A trained adult volunteer and parent/guardian will always accompany them.

Seniors are often targeted because they tend to be trusting and often have financial savings, own their homes, have good credit and may be less likely to report this type of crime to authorities. The FBI estimates that seniors in the United States lose more than $3 billion each year to scammers.
