The Bernalillo County Fire Department recently started the process to update the 2015 East Mountain Wildfire Protection Plan by incorporating the whole county in a 2022 Countywide Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).
Join the BernCo Fire Department and the East Mountain Interagency Fire Protection Association for a Zoom meeting on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m.
This update will include new mapping, analysis of current fuels, infrastructure, population, and values at risk in the East Mountains since 2015. This new plan will include the west side of the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande bosque urban interface.

The Board of County Commissioners continues to evaluate concepts for remapping political boundaries in response to population changes documented by the 2020 Census. The county must redraw the geographical boundaries that correspond to the county’s five districts to account for changes in population.

MDC Offers Recruitment and Retention Incentives
Includes longevity incentives for current employees
The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) is offering new corrections officers a $2,000 first-year hiring incentive. New corrections officers receive a total of $2,000 upon the successful completion of the corrections officer academy and probationary period. Starting pay for a corrections officer with MDC is $18.00 per hour and increases to $18.90 upon completion of the academy. Officers will receive an additional increase to $19.85 per hour upon completion of their one (1) year probationary period.
Applicants with prior corrections experience may qualify for a higher starting pay through MDC’s lateral entry program depending on experience and qualifications.

New longevity incentives have also been implemented to encourage current, more experienced staff members to continue working at MDC in the future.

To qualify all applicants must:
- Live outside the city of Albuquerque’s municipal boundary within Bernalillo County.
- Have COVID-19 related income loss that has made it difficult or unable to pay rent;
- Have documentation that shows the household’s current total gross household income is less than 80% of the median family income;
- Currently be on a lease, and not be recipients of other federally subsidized rental assistance programs (such as Section 8 or project-based voucher assistance, a housing choice voucher, or public housing);
- Not be a full-time student whose rent is paid by someone else.

The Bernalillo County Arts Board is soliciting proposals for artists or artists’ teams, based in New Mexico, for a site-specific mural project that will be located at a new park at the corner of Bridge Boulevard and Tower Road near Coors Boulevard. The address of the site is 3036 Bridge Blvd. SW, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87121.
 The request for qualifications will close on Dec. 1, 2021.
The proposed mural location is a wall with the dimensions of 143 feet by four feet, or approximately 572 square feet. The call is open to New Mexico-based artists. The established budget for the project is $50,000.
The winning artist or team will create a concept and design for the mural, engage in community outreach, and implement installation. The mural will be culturally relevant and represent the culture, heritage and landscapes of the region.
