The Bernalillo County Commission is authorizing the county manager to purchase land for a new fire station near I-40 and Atrisco Vista Boulevard.
The land will be purchased at a cost of $617, 158 plus closing costs.
The Bernalillo County Fire Department determined in 2019, that due to increases in industrial growth and the number of vehicle accidents occurring on the west stretch of Interstate 40, the new station is a necessity. Additionally, the station will respond to calls at the Metropolitan Detention Center and eventually to residential and commercial properties slated for future construction in the area.
State grant monies have been obtained and will be used for land acquisition and construction of the fire facility.

After extensive review of 30 proposals, the Bernalillo County Arts Board voted to recommend Jodie Herrera’s proposal to the County Commission for the Tiny Home Village public art project. The project will be a series of vibrant murals located mostly in the outdoor welcoming area and parking lot of the Tiny Home Village.
The budget for the mural is $43,000 and is funded by the county’s 1% for the Arts funds generated through general obligation bonds approved by voters.
In June 2020, the Bernalillo County Arts Board solicited a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) from New Mexico artists for the project. The 30 proposals went through detailed review process including public comment to narrow the selections to the top three. The Arts Board members include two members from each of the five commission districts and represent the arts fields in the community and work as visual artists, architects, arts educators, and arts advocates.
Jodie Herrera is a Northern New Mexican painter with Latina, Apache and Comanche ancestry. She has been an artist her whole life and started formally painting in 2011. Herrera received her BFA with honors from the University of New Mexico and currently resides in Albuquerque, where she works as a full-time artist and curator.
The mural is expected to be completed by early 2022.

After extensive review of over 70 proposals, the Bernalillo County Arts Board voted to recommend glass mosaic artist Gail Christofferson’s proposal to the County Commission for the county commission chambers mural.
The mural will be installed on the wall outside of the new chambers, inside of the county’s new flagship building, Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square. The budget for the mural is $75,000 and is funded by the county’s 1% for the Arts fund. Those funds were established through general obligation bonds.
For more than 10 years, Christofferson has been commissioned to work on over 30 murals, many of them community based. Her recent large-scale works include murals for the Facebook Data Center in Pineville, Oregon, and projects for public libraries, community centers, and a hospital in her home state of Ohio.
In June 2020, the Bernalillo County Arts Board solicited a national Request for Qualifications (RFQ) from artists for the new mural for the Alvarado Square chambers. The more than 70 proposals went through detailed review process including public comment to narrow the selections to the top three, Bimmer Torres, Cecilia Lueza, and Gail Christofferson.
The Arts Board members include two members from each of the five commission districts. They represent the arts fields in the community and work as visual artists, architects, arts educators, and arts advocates.
