Willingboro Township to Commemorate Veterans Day with Road Renaming and Parade
Willingboro Renames Levitt Parkway to Veterans Parkway
Willingboro, N.J. -- Willingboro Township today announced plans to change the name of Levitt Parkway (CR 629) to Veterans Parkway (CR 629) and will formally recognize the renaming at a ceremony hosted before a Veterans Day parade on November 11, 2022.
On July 5, 2022, the Township Council passed Ordinance 2022 – 8, an ordinance changing the name of Levitt Parkway (CR 629) to Veterans Parkway (CR 629) in Willingboro Township. The Burlington County Board of County Commissioners authorized the name change on September 28, 2022. The new law renaming the road stretching from U.S. Route 130 to the easterly connection of Woodlane Road in Westampton, NJ, will become effective on November 1, 2022.
The Levitt name dates back to the 1950s when Willingboro became the third largest residential development project by Levitt & Sons, who had a policy that prevented the sale of homes to African Americans. After debating the town’s checkered history, the renaming became an inflection point in Willingboro among residents. The Township Council proposed the change to honor veterans of war who represent a large population in Willingboro Township.
“This is a special time in Willingboro, as we reflect on the past and celebrate our future ahead,” said Community Affairs Executive Director Reva Foster. “We’re particularly pleased to rename Levitt Parkway to Veterans Parkway, signifying a community that embraces people of all walks of life and honors those that have served our country dutifully.”
On November 11, 2022, beginning at 11 AM, the Township will host a parade, starting with a ceremony to commemorate Veterans Day and an official sign unveiling recognizing the road renaming. The parade assembly will begin at 8:00 AM at the Kennedy Center at 429 John F Kennedy Way. The procession will start at 12:30 PM, make its way along the newly named Veterans Parkway, and end in front of the Municipal Complex at 1 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
“We’re excited to have the opportunity to honor our Veteran community here in Willingboro by celebrating them during a parade and renaming a major road in their honor,” said Township Manager Dwayne M. Harris. “Their sacrifice in our most significant time of need should never go unnoticed, and I want to especially thank the parade and events committee and Councilwoman Rebecca Perrone for spearheading this initative.”
