Important Update to Federal "REAL ID" Act and New Jersey Compliance for Domestic Travel

Clerk Hanlon was featured on the "Monmouth in Focus" TV series and advised residents about the Federal REAL ID Act which will take effect next fall, changing the current domestic travel protocol. Please click here to watch the full episode.

After the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, the federal government enacted the REAL ID requirements to better secure identification accepted for domestic travel and access to certain federal facilities.

Starting October 1, 2020, you must have a REAL ID compliant driver license/ID to fly within the U.S., unless you use a U.S. passport or another federally approved form of identification. Until that date, a Standard New Jersey driver license is valid for air travel within the U.S.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) has announced for driver licenses/IDs expiring after October 1, 2020, a REAL ID driver license/ID may now be obtained at three MVC locations in Monmouth County; Freehold, Neptune and Hazlet, by appointment only.

For those whose driver license/ID is up for renewal between now and October 1, 2020, the MVC recommends waiting until renewal time to get your REAL ID, which is anytime three months prior to the expiration date on your driver license/ID card.

The Monmouth County Clerk has three passport offices located in Freehold, Eatontown, and Neptune, with the latter offering convenient weekend and evening hours. Please visit our website, MonmouthCountyClerk.com, for more information about the passport application process and our locations.
