March-April 2019

National Kick Butts Day

National Kick Butts Day for 2019 is March 20. Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism empowering youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. Events are organized around the U.S. by teachers, youth leaders and health advocates to help raise awareness of the problems of tobacco. The Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse is participating in this national awareness day in local schools through creative activities aimed at continuing conversations about healthy lifestyles.

World Health Day – Universal Health Coverage

World Health Day is Sunday, April 7, 2019.  This year’s focus is Universal Health Coverage, World Health Organization's (WHO) number one goal. Progress is being made, but millions of people still have no access at all to health care. Millions more are forced to choose between health care and other daily expenses such as food, clothing and even a home. For more information on World Health Day, visit the World Health Organization’s website.

March is Colorectal Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the U.S. and the second leading cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer affects people in all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people age 50 and older.

The good news is that if everyone age 50 and older were screened regularly, 6 out of 10 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented. Communities, health professionals and families can work together to encourage people to get screened.

World TB Day

Sunday, March 24, 2017 is World TB Day.  The theme for this year is “It’s TIME!”  Goals of this theme are to test and treat latent TB infection, strengthen TB education and awareness among health care providers and to end the stigma associated with the disease. To read more, visit the CDC’s Website.

Eye Screenings

In partnership with the New Jersey Commission for The Blind and Visually Impaired, the Monmouth County Health Department offers a free eye screening clinic for ages 3 and up on the second Monday of each month from 3-6 p.m. at the MCHD. The clinic is for eye health, visual acuity and glaucoma. For questions or appointments contact our main office at 732-431-7456.

National Infant Immunization Week

April 27th until May 4rd is National Infant Immunization Week, an annual observance highlighting the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable disease and to celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities.  Childhood immunizations are provided free of charge for residents of the towns under the Monmouth County Board of Health system, for children from birth to 18 years of age who are under insured or uninsured.

Monmouth County Mosquito Control

Spring is the time to check your yard for standing water and other conditions which can offer harborage for insects such as mosquitoes and ticks. In 2019, the Division will once again practice “Active Surveillance” which enables us to make more accurate assessments of tick-borne disease risk in a variety of locations throughout Monmouth County.

MCHD Completes Two-Year Coastal Lake Study

During 2017 and 2018, the MCHD conducted a study of Coastal Lakes outflowing to the Atlantic in Monmouth County.  These lakes have unique environmental and lake management problems such as sedimentation, algae blooms, low oxygen levels and elevated bacteria levels.  MCHD’s two year study coordinated with the NJDEP Marine Water Monitoring Department’s Deal Lake Harmful Algae Bloom study.  Lake samples to locate point and non-point sources of nutrient, sediment and bacterial inputs took place at 10 stations.  A full report and results will be available on the MCHD website.
