Archives

Dear Monmouth County resident,

I write to invite you to the County Clerk's 23rd Annual Monmouth County Archives & History Day this Saturday, October 13th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters located at 125 Symmes Drive in Manalapan.

Our free annual event hosts more than 60 local state and history organizations which set-up displays on topics related to New Jersey history and their organizations. Throughout the day, speakers and panel discussions will focus on this year's theme of historic buildings in Monmouth County. A catalog, entitled "Buildings in Monmouth: Stories and Styles," was painstakingly prepared over the past year by the County Clerk’s Archives Division, under the direction of Archivist Gary D. Saretzky, along with several volunteer historians who contributed to the content of the exhibit and catalog.

At 10 a.m., President Ulysses S. Grant, portrayed by Richard Hill, will reminisce about his time spent in Long Branch. President Ulysses S. Grant’s 28-room cottage in Long Branch, where he spent his summers between 1870 to 1884, is featured in the catalog. The Keynote Address, “Open Spaces, Historic Places: The Story of Monmouth County in our Parks,” will be delivered by Gail L. Hunton, Chief of the Land Acquisition and Design Department of the Monmouth County Park System, at 1 p.m.

There will also be awards presentations at 11 a.m. and a tour of the Monmouth County Archives facility at 2 p.m.

With over 300 expected attendees, I encourage you to bring the family, enjoy the exhibits and learn something new about the history of Monmouth County and New Jersey!
