Mercer County to replace Locust Lane bridge
over Harry's Brook in Princeton

TRENTON — The Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will start the reconstruction of the bridge on Locust Lane over Harry’s Brook in Princeton on Monday, Aug. 2. Officially known as Bridge #364.15, the structure is located on Locust Lane off NJ Route 27 (Princeton-Kingston Road). This project is to be completed in 150 calendar days, weather permitting.

During construction, the bridge will be staged and open to traffic on a 24/7 basis. The contractor installed advance notification signs on July 16.

The existing bridge carrying Locust Lane over Harry’s Brook is a non-composite adjacent box beam bridge. The structure is considered structurally deficient due to the poor condition of the superstructure and functionally obsolete due to the inadequate deck geometry.

The reconstructed bridge will be a single-span structure supported on full-height concrete abutments. The superstructure will consist of steel-welded plate girders with a composite reinforced concrete deck. The substructure will be full-height reinforced concrete abutments founded on cast-in-place footings. The structure will have cast-in-place reinforced concrete approach slabs. The proposed roadway cross-section at the bridge will consist of two 15-foot travel lanes and one 5-foot sidewalk.

The contractor selected to perform the work, Colonelli Brothers Inc. of Hackensack, submitted a bid price of $997,000. Colonelli Brothers Inc. has successfully completed similar projects in Mercer County and provided the lowest bid price for this project. The contract was approved by the Mercer County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 28, 2021.
